Give over and report back when you do have something to report rather than conjecture, supposition and could it be? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

The transfer box is basically a dog clutch, there is no smooth way of selecting any ratio/gear. Best done slightly on the move in my opinion, let alone stationary fiddling and faffing about. Drive it enjoy it and stop messing! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

totally agree. (mostly).
as you'll all be aware I'm no motor mechanic (and certainly not with defenders) ...... I fully get the worts n all but what just can not get my head around is the inconsistency (and I'm not talking slightly barely perceivable viations due to slight temp differences etc. I someone could explain why things go from to great (and I could understand / agree) I could either decide to live with it or sell it but at present I'm on a mission to fix ........... something got a new (well almost) gearbox on the way at a good price - I'm then looking to get a fully rebuilt transferbox. tie em together and do a swap - then keep or sell on the left overs. that then only leaves the rear axle that's original (and the engine). if nothing else its good learning process (if a little costly - albeit with selling the redundant parts isn't as bad as it could be). |

Fool quit possibly but to be honest me and my money and generally only parted after thorough consideration. I reckon my old box will be worth almost what I'm paying for the 'new' one - that the plan at least.
I also plan to keep Mr defender for a long time so if there is a problem with the old one I may get it rebuilt and store for later? Or perhaps I am just a fool? |

I realise you keep making light of it but these are really not the actions of a sensible person...
Please don't reply with a smiley of some description as I'm trying to be sort of serious, you need to take a good long look at yourself, it's not normal.... |

I'll refrain from using the 'smiley' although that's part of what keeps me going.
on a serious note the gearbox is in transit and I'm preparing / arranging for a rebuilt transfer box and hopefully I be able to report something useful back in due course. ps. you are being serious right? I never suggested I was normal and heck my wife certainly wouldn't call me that, she just puts up with me (damn it that was close - a smilely almost slipped out). |

Maybe you're not thrashing it enough? Mine started making a funny noise on the over-run, so off we went for a good blip on the M4, Windsor to Swindon in 50 mins, that showed her. Is the noise still there? don't know, don't care, landie is still going.
On a more technical note, In used to use Jimi Hendrix to drown out any odd sounds but I've moved to old skool jungle classics, and I must say it's working very well.....I believe that General Levy may hold the answer to your questions.. Oh woe, oh woe My crusty old landrover, It will not go. |

- No need whatsoever! Caterham, I think the point is people may have reached their limit with your woes. Just do what you must and there's no need to report at all. With your 'Caterham's last problem thread' that turned into a marathon followed by several others, enough is enough. Please!
