After driving 600 miles in 10 and a bit hours, the metal of the seat box was ulmost untouchable it was that hot, should I be worried ? Overheating gearbox or transfer box ? I guess I should start with checking oil levels in both ?

I get this, I would say its hottest where the seat box meets the tunnel. I thought my heated seat was on.
Should i be checking the oil levels or is this normal? 2014 Puma - hopefully not a sign of impending transfer exploding... I'm at 16k miles |

If you had your window open its quite common as with the window open it pulls the heat up from the gearbox area. Ray

They do get hot. Only thin metal and no heat wrap separating. Lovely in summer. Too hot in winter! 1951 80" S1 2.0

Mine got very hot until it had done a few miles, almost like bedding or running-in in the good old days. Depending on the age under 12 months, it should go away. If not just check the oil levels. Monty-2015 2.2 110 XS Puma Station Wagon

Hmmm, this is an interesting thread, mine never gets hot at all. When its +35 C nothing, just warm no matter how much Or how long I drive, or pull a trailer? My old SIII 300Tdi got hotter than this 110 but not as hot as what is described herein. If you guys say that this is kind of normal I would be wondering what is up? I'd be concerned that the fluid is low or bearings are too tight or worn? My old RRC got quite hot much more than any Defender I have driven.... Different gearbox and T-case though. When I first had my Td5 110 we dragged a twin axle tin tent up to Scotland and my poor wife was being cooked in the passenger seat. The biggest improvement that cut down most of the heat was to take out the centre exhaust box and replace it with a straight through pipe.

Could it be the brake shoes on the handbrake not fully releasing so they're rubbing the prop shaft when driving?
If the drum warms uo could it then transfer to the seat box? Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Mine gets hot too. Cold weather it's fine as it just warms the cabin nicely but on a motorway cruise on a hot day and you notice it.
For holiday last year we drove down to the South of France which was quite painful. 35+ degrees outside and the heat coming through the seat box was insane. Seats were hotter than heated seats and you couldn't touch the handbrake! Replaced all oils when I got back and nothing untoward so assume it's a perk of a Defender! 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5 |
