Could be the clutch but they usually go wrong in other ways, if it's in neutral with the clutch connected, drive engaged (foot off the pedal) do you get a rattle?
If the clonk is serious then a possible cause is the intermediate adaptor shaft that connects the gearbox and transfer box. They are a frequent cause of issues. Possible clonks come from that shaft, UJs (but those would have been replaced with the prop shafts), diffs, half shafts and drive flanges. I would assume that they changed the drive flanges with the half shafts but I might be wrong on that one. If the prop shafts or the handbrake aren't bolted on properly you can get some funny noises too. When does it clonk? Is it when you pull away, change gear,...? What do you use the car for, much towing? |

thanks for the detailed thoughts.
it clonks as follows. driving, clutch down change gear clutch up clonk, sounds like the center rear area. also does it same set up in reverse. i will check with lr what was done as on warranty work they hand out no paper work, all they said was half shafts and prop. towing wise, not sure i got the lrd at 11k the lady had a pony and small horse box that she said occasionally was towed, didn't think this would stress it too much ? i towed an 8m rib and trailer for years on a ford ranger and no dramas This post has been edited by the site administration team: CAPS OFF |

Play in the rear axle A frame ball joint is a prime candidate for creating clunks as are diffs, half shafts, drive members, loose pinion and propshaft fixings. Also check shock and suspension bushes and, as has already been mentioned, you have the possibility of play in the adapter shaft but they are generally either ok ...or you have no drive.
If that lost doesn't fix it take a look at the clutch switch too. Oh and Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Is it on every gear change or just under certain circumstances, is it equally clonky each time - can you shed any further light on symptoms?
