As long as the screws are not rusted up your plan is the best answer.
I can't remember if you can get to the handle screws without removing the metal panel behind the door trim that holds the window winder mechanism. So the job might take longer than you think. Make sure you have spare plastic clips for putting the door trim back on as they always break. |

If you have manual windows, don't forget the tip from this forum about using a duster and a sawing motion behind the handle to release the clip

Yes you will need to remove the door trim but I think the metal bonded in fixing in the handle itself will have let go meaning you will need a new handle. Ray

Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Hello
Passenger side on mine did this, almost as if it was going to pull off in hand... I took the door card off to fit the silent coat and it was literally a screw to tighten it and job done just be careful taking the door card off you try not to snap the plastic lugs off. I thought it would be a pain but an easy job |

They look right
Pretty certain on mine if they clip off you can re fasten them on Could be worth having some spare at that price but 50.... If you want to split I would be happy to but 10 to keep spare. |

My post from about 18 months ago
loose door handles Report post A couple of months ago 1 of the screws fell out of my drivers door handle, today I noticed that the passengers side one was loose. So this is a warning to all, if you notice your door handle is loose tighten the screws before they fall out. the fix tools = philips screw driver, torx t20 driver, trim tools or suitable alternative, 2mm pin or equivalent 1/ remove the door closer handle (philips screw driver) 2/ remove the door release handle back plate (philips screw driver) 3/ push the pins into the two trim clips at diagonal opposite corners of the door, (do not push them right through) 4/ pull the door card off carefully it has fir tree type clips top, bottom and rear edge, work it around the door release handle and door lock plunger 5/ Poke a hole through the foam and plastic sheet in line with the door handle screws and then tighten them 6/ I then smeared silicone sealant on the screw heads/door panel to stop them coming undone again. 7/ tape over the 2 holes refit is reverse of removal, guide the door panel over the release lever and lock plunger and the cable guide rubber note it is much easier to do this before the screw has fallen right out, if it (they) have fallen right out recovering them from the bottom of the door generally involved the use of a magnet, or damage to the foam door liner . total time 30 mins per side DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I'd be very interested to know what you do get in the end, my driver's door handle has been wobbly since I bought the Defender 2 years ago and I've been putting off taking the door car off.

FWIW, I've fixed leaks on the drivers front, lock on the front passenger, noise on the mid passenger and unmounted the wheel on the rear. Never had an issue with the clips...
Not sure what, if anything, I'm doing right though! Go figure? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

The white bits in the YRM link are fitted in the door frame. They are usually ok and don't ever need replacing. The 2 larger black bits are fitted to opposite corners in each door and usually reusable if you don't loose the middle bits. The smaller black bits are the ones that can break. They fix between the door card and the white bits in the frame. |

Unfortunately, more often than not, it's the feeble plastic bit that holds the black peg to the door card that breaks rather than the black peg itself. This can be very difficult or impossible to repair, although if it is a thick part of the card a suitable countersunk head wood screw can be screwed into the card and the peg attached to the head.
After removing and refitting these door cards many times, the two things I always do to preserve the clips are (1) always use a trim removal tool so that the pegs are pulled out as straight as possible and the leverage is applied right by the peg, and (2) lubricate the pegs with either silicone polish or Vaseline before refitting. If you have a 4-door Defender with central locking you need to get good at this job because you'll be doing it annually to fix the wiring! If you lose the peg from the expanding plugs an offcut of fence wire can be used as a replacement peg. |
