You can buy the later 2002-on variant with the attachment for central locking. Only problem is that it uses the later longer barrelled key, so you'd need to change that too.
Alternatively you can split the old lock (drill the rivets out) and attach a rod inside, or I've seen people attach it to the locking tab on the inside too. |

Some small countersunk screws/nuts can be used to re-tighten it. Beware of springs going boing if you open it though!
Yes the new style will fit, the rear door lock orifice is the same right from present day back to the Series 2 in the late fifties. |

The repair kit I bought for mine the other week (locking spring breaks) came with pop rivets to hold it back together. Seems to work just fine!
