Hi all,
I'm sure I've seen one of these somewhere before but can't find it when I need it! So here goes - please can anyone help me with sourcing this modification? I'm looking for a lockable door/cover that converts the recess created by the fuel filler cap into a little cubby hole. Its important that it has a numbered barrel to lock (no keys) - does such a thing exist?! Many thanks in advance of any replies |

You can get a thing called a Defendoor but it isn't lockable and just clips into place until it is stolen, blows off, or left at a diesel station.
There isn't much point in armoring the fuel filler point because if someone wants to steal the fuel they can cut the huge rubber pipe under the wing and siphon it out. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

I've seen a homemade version of what you mentioned in the past. I think it was a hinge and flap inner frame from a Range Rover classic, with a piece of ally cut to fit the Defender aperture stuck over it.
Nothing a few rivets and some ally can't fix, but is it really worth the hassle!? Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! My 2015 Defender: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39625.html - SOLD! |

Many thanks for the replies guys
It's not to save fuel theft. To add a bit more detail, we are a rescue team and have the need to leave keys locked on vehicles when out on jobs so that the vehicle can be moved or accessed by someone other than the original driver. We have lockable key safes already but this can be fiddly to use especially when the weathers foul. I thought I'd seen somewhere a "conversion" flap which makes a lockable cubby hole out of the filler recess. The search goes on I guess... |

Be aware that most of the readily-available combination key safes can be opened remarkably quickly with no damage whatsoever, especially the kind with push buttons. The kind with rotating dials take a couple of minutes longer. I wouldn't trust one as far as I can throw it.

Have you thought about the wing top locker that fits into the blanking plate on the wing.
http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/gmb-fender-locker.html Not cheap but might do the trick. Obviously it is a keyed lock but looking at it there may be the possibility of getting suited locks so that one key works on all. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper. Hi Alun, it is much easier to answer with more information that you have supplied.
Forget the fuel cap area as that is just likely to give you grief in having one made. Go to the Mudstuff website, what you need is the Fender Locker by GMB. Fits into the wing top O/S where the blanking plate is. Have a look here edit to add great minds etc Phil. You just beat me to it! Brendan |

Thanks all again. The Fender Locker looks ideal but the key makes it totally impractical - it has to have a combination lock.

Could you get more keys cut for possible drivers?
Or how about a metal magnetic box of some sort hidden under the car somewhere? Don't think anything ideal in bad weather / dark I would also worry the combination would stick in winter. |

If i know the rescue services, it's more about getting to any vehicle at any point...in a calm rush... if you have six vehicles, that's 6 keys..and you need the first vehicle that you come to...
we should be able to find someone who can put a hoop in both the moving top fender wing door and the fender itself in order to put a combination lock through it? |

I just did a quick eBay UK hunt and found a lock that could be fitted to the Mud locker.

Beware the second key safe in the link above can be opened in minutes, it is really not secure.
