After my son passed his test my wife & I spent a day and half on the phone running through the various options with countless insurance companies. Black boxes will reduce premiums as will naming an experienced parent as another driver - if you have passed your test you really do need to be listed as the primary driver.
Be aware that a number of policies for new drivers impose a non use curfew late at night / early morning which obviously restricts usage. This would have been unsuitable for my son as he will need to start shift work as part of his apprenticeship at some point. Some policies may want to restrict annual mileage too. If you have not passed your test be prepared for a substantial premium hike when you do. Son now has a 1.3 Eurobox which is cheap to run, is comfortable and has plenty of airbags covered by a 12,000 annual mileage allowance, no curfew, black box [with live online tracking and journey scoring accessible to him and us] new driver fully comp policy with Marmalade [part of Allianz] for a sub £1000 premium. While I fully appreciate a Defender is your desire building up a bit of NCB in something a bit less anachronistic really is the sensible thing to do. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

When I looked at getting a black box it actually put my premium up, by almost double. YMMV
I also drive almost exclusively in the evenings. |

As others have said, get on the 'phone and be prepared to ring a dozen or so companies. There will be huge variations as some companies will deliberately price up business they do not want. I remember when trying to arrange insurance to cover my son at 17 that one company wanted twice as much for TPFT as for fully comp, simply because they wanted to stay away from the young driver TPFT market.
Keep trying - it will be worth it. And a Land Rover is an excellent first car - it will teach you skills you will simply never acquire driving anything else! Godd luck. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not ... oh! That is a dent! 2014 90 XS SW 1997 Discovery 300TdiS (retired to stud) 1966 Series IIA 88" (now my son's) 2001 Astra - I need something to go and buy the parts when the others are off the road! |

I spoke to my insurer about adding my daughter to our 90 and they came back with a figure of about £4k. From what I can make out the approach to insurance has changed and whereas 20 years ago getting insurance on a Series 3 or Defender was reasonably cheap, they now base it on the amount of damage the vehicle can do to other vehicles.
Interested to hear how you get on. |

Insurance group still counts, most defenders are still group 15 or something, same group as fiestas and the sporty ones at that.
However as Huttopia said its not just insurance group, as young drivers driving big cars with big engines (regardless of power output) are expensive. Let me put context, 23 year old me in a 2003 TF5 110 XS, E* area being kept in an "other area", with some business insurance. One accident 3 years prior but was (and still is unresolved). £2374.4 0 Year no clam (kept switching cars) Guaranteed car hire Fully comp Business use included. And this required a black box too. Only direct line and admiral would provide competitive quotes, specialists would simply say no try again in a couple years. Even today a few years on £1700 quite frankly anything between £2-4k is pretty reasonable for any half decent car for anyone below 30. I got a quote on a focus 1.8 - 2008 £1600 and 2003 yaris with cassette player £900.
