300tdi Black smoke - possible causes?
I replaced the head gasket on my 300tdi and now there is a lot of black smoke from the exhaust particularly at high revs under load. So far I have used a compressor to pressurize the pipes from the turbo through the intercooler and back to the inlet manifold - no leaks/hissing.

I understand that black smoke is caused either by excess fuel or a lack of oxygen, therefore is the next suspect the injectors? I removed and replaced them multiple times during the gasket replacement as I had sealing issues (now fixed) however they were not dropped or knocked at all so I don't think they are damaged.

Unfortunately I didn't specifically watch the exhaust prior to the head gasket replacement and so I don't know if the issue was caused by something that changed then or if it had been smoking for a while.

Any help/suggestions are very much appreciated. Thumbs Up Matt.

Wear or misalignment of the timing belt can cause smoke. I had had this experience after serious greenlaning and wading and forgot to plug the timing housing, wich caused serious wear of the timing belt. Embarassed Cheers, Vincent

Have you checked for excessive wear in the turbo? Bearing failure can cause excessive movement in the turbine/compressor blades this at high revs then fails to supply the correct boost pressure. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I found my turbo was loose on its connection with the exhaust manifold. That seems to make it smoke some!
