[Wanted] Helping a Damsel in distress - 90 front Prop &
Morning All,
My wife decided to offered my services out last week to a women she met at a women in engineering day at JCB, he daughter went out and bought a G reg 90 with Disco 200tdi conversion for ... well more than its worth...

The mother was worried that It was unsafe so my wife hired me out to look and sort the issues..

Well the list was vast, one thing that bugs me is it had an MOT cert for last Oct, with the list off issues, they most certainly would have been evident on the last MOT, there wasn't even any advisories.. Shocked

the 200 has been bodged in really, one of the untidiest I've seen.

The drive flanges are loose and damaged from being loose, but I have some old ones I can fit with some new bolts.

So most things are like prop shaft UJ worn and most of the suspension bushes, discs, pads oil leak etc etc.. All the usual small stuff that shouldn't come round all at once..

Biggest cost item is..

It looks like someone has fitted either a rear prop or a wrong prop shaft on the front. the slider is at maximum compression and has basically crushed the diff pinion bearing, the pinion moves around like a sausage roll, albert hall type affair..

So, I'm looking for a front diff and a front prop shaft.

I'm trying to sort this as cheaply as possible, but ordering all new disc pads, bearings and seals for the front along with all the UJ's etc.

The Oil leak is just the rocker cover gasket.

I wont be charging her any labour as it should only be a days work for the front axle and another few hours for the UJ's

Any help would be great to get this girl back on the road safely..

I know its her own fault in getting ripped off, but still doesn't negate the fact that some moron has taken advantage.

please get in touch if you have a prop or diff I can buy from you..

Cheers,

hi there

do you have any idea of the length of shaft you're after ?
I've got what I think is a front shaft of a 200 tdi 110 that I swapped many years ago, which you would be welcome to

regards kevin

Hi Kevin,

That would be great, Its the same set up as mine, so I'll measure up my front prop tonight and get the measurements. I would guess that the front prop from a 110 200tdi would be the same, just the rear longer..

Also,

does anyone know which diff will be fitted to the front on a 1988 90?

10/ 12/ 24 spline? I assume 10, but not sure on that.. I have 24 spine disco axle fitted to mine.

I'll pull them out in the next few days to check, but just wondered if anyone knew so I could start the search.. ?

Thanks! My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey Smile 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

It will be 10 spline unless the axle has been changed. If you can read the axle number off that should tell you.

Never heard of a 12 spline diff?

I have a pair of complete 10 spline axles off my 1988 90. Worn swivel pins, pitted swivels and various leaks but otherwise totally complete. Could give you a diff if nothing else Whistle  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Martin,

TBH if the diff isn't too worn on the bearing then its better than what's in there.. how much would you want for the front axle? depends on logistics of course, or if you could pull the diff out so I could send a courier maybe? then weigh the rest in Rolling with laughter

to be honest, id never heard of a 12 spline diff..

but it came up on an Ebum search so I thought I'd put it out there as an option..

I know lots and lots about defenders, but I will never call myself an expert as there's always something else to learn.. I never like to assume.. I'd rather ask a stupid question and get called a t#*t Laughing My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. I can't help with bits, and I'm too far away to assist passing spanners, but I would just like to say well done for putting yourself out (ok your wife volunteered you). It's all too common in this day and age for people to walk past and say "not my problem".
So well done. Chivalry isn't dead and I tip my hat to you sir. Thumbs Up Mr. Green New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info
