Autobox for Defender
Question for the group. Is the V8 autobox the same as the Td5 auto? If not what's the difference? Just curious what would be involved in putting it into a Td5 Defender.

The torque convertor is different, obviously the bell housing is different, not sure what the differences are in valving.

A badly matched auto box is a real PITA to drive although with an electronic box and an after market controller like the Compushift you can tune out many of the issues and make it more drivable. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Thanks I figured those things. I'll drop a note to Ashcroft, his tansmission guru's will know for sure about compatability etc. Its ust that we have tons of V8s over here and no Td5 Disco IIs. Be a LOT less expensive to do. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

David Ashcroft responded very quickly. Excellent service there. I had them build and ship me an LT77S gearbox and an LT230Q 2 wheel / 4 wheel drive transfer case many years ago (still truoble free).

Anyway, for those who do not know and may be curious about... A Disco or RRC 300 Tdi autobox and torque converter with a Td5 bell-housing will work. Best option is a genuine Td5 D2 autobox and torque converter (and Ashcroft computhingy). Both apparently the only ways to mate an auto gearbox to a Td5 Defender.

Good to know, Cheers 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)
