Well some pillock over loaded my Ifor Willaims tipping trailer by about 4 tonnes and another pillock (that'll be me) decided that with the power of all 4 wheels and a little bit of assistance from my mate Warn on the front bumper it'll be fine!
So after about 10 seconds of the winch pulling the plasma went taut, the clutch cut in - that's the clue that she can't pull no more - so I winched some more, then nothing, no noise, just the clicking of the solenoid saying no more. So after we recovered the trailer - using a tractor, off I went to the workshop, this is what I found https://www.defender2.net/gallery/displayi...p;pos=-376 https://www.defender2.net/gallery/displayi...p;pos=-375 2019 MY Disco 5 HSE Lux Audi A4 Avant 3.0L TDI Quattro - WOW 2016 90 Adventure |

Never ever ever keep/hold your finger on the button once the winch slows down

It didnt slow down, it just stopped
To be fair there was no warning, the clutch cut in, released some rope, I tried again and it blew. There was no warning, to be honest I have never seen a motor implode like that before, a mate of mine who does the Argyll Winch Challenge and abuses all his kit has never seen anything like it either. No noise, no squeaking, it just stopped. Maverick, that was a winch motor! 2019 MY Disco 5 HSE Lux Audi A4 Avant 3.0L TDI Quattro - WOW 2016 90 Adventure |

In the past I have winched so much that I have had to pour water onto the casing to cool it down, an 8274, not this one, but I would have expected it to overheat and turn off, it is the 9.5 ti. The t is for thermo cut out, it surprised me that it just went bang, surely to go bang it would had to get hot and then the thermo should have cut in.
I reckon I was trying to pull a rolling load of about 8 tonnes, so in effect I was looking for assistance, not a dead lift, anyway new motor installed, tried tested all OK. 2019 MY Disco 5 HSE Lux Audi A4 Avant 3.0L TDI Quattro - WOW 2016 90 Adventure |

Did the warning light not come on. Im not so sure that it cuts out on thermo lock - ill read my manual to see what it says. Still good effort. Mike |

At yes, the manual, as to the light coming on, well I have adapted the winch so I can use it off the cable and also from buttons in the cab and on the side of the grille, the wasrning light isn't wired up to the switches I have to confess I assumed it would cut out and not just warn me, but from wiching to blowing up was about 30 seconds.
You're right it was a good effort! 2019 MY Disco 5 HSE Lux Audi A4 Avant 3.0L TDI Quattro - WOW 2016 90 Adventure |
