Matt Painting a 110
Has anyone got a matt painted defender? What's it like to live with and is it simple enough to keep clean?

I normally snow foam my cars but will that damage a matt finish?

I painted my Defender in a matt paint last year and really like it. Dead easy to live with. I just wash it as normal and then dry it off with a microfiber cloth and that's it. No need for polish or wax etc.

I don't see why snow foam should have any negative effects. I use Autoglym on my Defender and its fine.

Its nice that it look a bit different to the usual paint/colours you see. I am really happy with it.

Looks really good. What clear coat did you use?

No clear coat. I used HMG C71 Synthetic paint that doesn't require clear coat.

Does that last as long without the clear coat protection?

Not sure how it will last long term. It is a tough industrial paint and is claimed to be hard wearing. My Defender has weathered very well so far and shows no sign of fading or deterioration.

Yes I have for 4 years, almost Matt and almost satin - it suits the vehicle and doesn't show bodywork imperfections. It is also really easy to touch up and spray in pannels.

The paint fades slightly more than a gloss finish, but a wipe over every 2 years after washing with a WD40 on a rag restores the finish and colour, no need for any polish and any surface scratches are totally invisible. Makes the vehicle look very utilitarian and totally suits a proper Land Rover.

Oh and yes mine came like that courtesy of Land Rover and HM Government. NATO Green - Anti Radar - on a 12k miles Defender!

My ex RM Defender 110 has been painted with Jotun Conseal for 14 years. Touch ups don't show at all, and you can use a roller for an excellent finish. About 45 quid for 5 litres, about 20.quid for a gallon of thinners. Lasts for years, really really tough paint.

Alex, is that grey? Looks fab in that shot.

Mine is 'satin'. Just a wing in this pic, but the best I have of it outside.

Hi Greeni,

Yes it's Granite Grey from the RAL colour chart. It is a really nice grey as it has a 'shimmer' almost like a metallic when it's in this lovely sun we have at the moment.

hi Ross,

Yes it was sprayed just using a cheap HVLP gun and a compressor both from Machine Mart. It just needed thinking with white spririt, although it recommends 10% thinners I found that 20% made it flow much better.

Nice to know.... thank you.

Did you remove each panel and spray individually or did you spray the car fully assembled?

Thanks
