So my rear step fell off today revealing the extent of the rot especially on the rear cross member. I knew it wasn't in a great state and had plans to fully rebuild it on a galvanised chassis in a few years time but after closer inspection today I'm going have to move that forward to this summer (if it'll last till then ).
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The cross-member is literally just flaking away and it doesn't look much better further up the chassis. The holes in the battery box are almost big enough to fit my hands through and the outriggers are looking a bit worse for wear. Obviously I won't be doing any towing with it until this is sorted. So I'm now beginning to research the whole restoration process, including sourcing a galvanised chassis and will be able to strip it down and rebuild it over the summer. Other slightly less expensive jobs recently have included replacing the exhaust rear section, was given the choice of Britpart for £40 or genuine part for £75, I figured it would be cheaper in the long run to go for the genuine. Pretty straight forward to get the old one off and new one on. Click image to enlarge I have also fitted Bolt On Bits light guards purely for the looks rather than any purpose of protecting the lights (not the best pic but the only one I had on my phone): Click image to enlarge I also replaced the old manky, cracked plastic number plates with nice pressed ali plates in the original font: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Matt. The only time it snowed for us, I happened to take the 306 to work, so the next day I brought in the defender. I had right old laugh going to work. The roads were really slushy in places, and everyone was driving with their tails between their legs. Here's procta lad here, just powering on like a boss Poor bmw driver was practically crawling to make matters worse for him, he had a disco sat right up his arse. no pressure there pal He under took him in the end, I did think about doing the same thing, but I thought nah I am not that cruel yet Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Bought and fitted a Raptor Engineering dash this week. Fantastic bit of kit, really well made and I really like the satin black finish. There's loads of choices of panels with different cut-outs, with a lot of deliberation and scribbling I eventually settled on 2 52mm gauge cut-outs on top, and a single DIN and switch holes on the bottom.
It was pretty straight-forward to fit but I couldn't do it in 20 mins as advertised on their website (not properly anyway). First step was to cut away the vinyl covering. Click image to enlarge Then the metal behind. Click image to enlarge Then I slotted it in and drilled two holes through the grey trim and metal behind that to bolt it in place by taking the ash tray out. Click image to enlarge Next was to begin wiring everything up. I bought a voltmeter for one of the 52mm holes and put the original clock I took out for my rev counter in the other. Click image to enlarge Then I wired in my various switches and USB chargers. I bought 4 ordinary on/off switches and 1 spring loaded self-return on/off switch for the rear washer jets. One of the other switches does the rear wiper, and the switch underneath the light is my electric fan override switch. The light indicates when the fan is on either by the thermostat or by the override switch. Finally, I bought a plastic DIN tray insert to go in the din slot as a handy place to put my phone and other bits and bobs. I also have two USB charging slots and a standard 12v ciggy lighter. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I'm really impressed with the quality of the dash and for £90, seems very good value. The only downside to the installation is that I've lost the rear wiper park feature as that was built into the standard switch - I couldn't exactly figure out how it worked and whether or not I could reproduce it in my new setup. But it didn't work half the time anyway so it's not a huge loss. The gap on the left at the top is for a digital outdoor temperature gauge so I know when there's a risk of ice etc but that hasn't arrived yet because it's on the slow boat from China - can't really complain at £3.50 Matt. looking neat there iam toying with the idea of fitting the dash part from the TD5, (centre console part) should be a matter of swopping over stuff, rather than cutting Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

In that case I think you'd be interested in this kit here from Mud: http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/mud-defender-console.html Matt.

The final part for my dash arrived yesterday so I got that fitted:
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I put the sensor in the driver's side front wing, away from turbo/exhaust temperatures and hopefully wind chill. A nice, well made unit and certainly can't complain at £3.50 Inspired by Grafty's recent shiny pics I decided to give my 90 a long overdue wash. Just a quick rub down with a hosepipe and a sponge - nothing too fancy but done a decent job. Before: Click image to enlarge After: Click image to enlarge Matt.
