2007/11 Defender recall ??
Hi Guys just a quick question, I have received from LR a safety recall on my 2007 Puma ( P022 ) for a potential problem with the seal on the rear of the transfer box, what the letter advises is that the seal fails and contiminates the handbrake shoes, the fix is to remove a spacer behind the cover of the seal? has anyone else had any notification like this?

I phoned my local LR dealership Stratstone after being advised by LR to arrange an appointment which I have done, but during the conversation the service woman advised which has made me think its a ploy to get business, that they carry out a full check of the vehicle on arrival, brakes, steering, tyres etc in fact they go right through it she said, I did ask does that mean I am bound to have any potential work done with you? she said no but being old and very sceptical I do wonder?

Any of you guys had this letter ?

It's common practice when ever your vehicle goes into a dealership, they do a "health check". They usually wash them too.

You'll get a print out with any other faults they find and estimates for the repairs, but you can take it away with you and get any other work done where ever you like.

Some manufacturers use minor safety recalls to get people in to the dealerships to look at the new products and tempt you with a new car. But you can just get the free work done and leave.

Hi ZSDpuma, thank you for the post so quickly, well the woman did say roughy what you said, however you did not mention if you have had the same recall?

I am just wary these days of anything which mentions free what ever it is, as I have found nothing is free

Anyway thanks for the reply

This is a really, really old recall and I am surprised that it hasn't already been done. I imagine that your Defender has for some reason just (re)surfaced on the dealer system and they have checked for outstanding recalls, and found that this has been missed.

My 2007 110 has this done in 2010.

It is a mod to try to prevent oil leaking out of the transfer box into the handbrake drum, and making the handbrake ineffective. The problem has (allegedly) coume about because, unlike all previous Defenders, the Puma's engine and gearbox are mounted nose-up, so the oil level at the back of the transfer box is higher. (This is a fairly fishy explanation for a number of obvious reasons, but is the one offered by LR).

If your handbrake is working satisfactorily at the moment there is probably no real urgency to get it done.

Yes mine had it done years ago apparently.

Rover also did a recall on my mini in about 2002, apparently the rear wheel bearings could suffer water ingress. However they're the same bearings which had been used for decades without issue. I wasn't complaining though, i got a pair of free wheel bearings fitted.

Some of it is down to liability, they've had a number of vehicles in a certain VIN range with a particular failure for example. And they're worried they'll be held liable if there was an serious incident as a result or they're worried the DVSA might force them to do a recall and get them bad press, So they recall the vehicles anyway. But as i said it gets you to visit the dealership so they can say hello and tempt you with the shiny new cars in the show room, if across the globe they sell a few extra cars as a result of people coming in and taking a fancy to a new Range Rover because of the recall it pays for the cost of the recall. They might notice and recommend other work that needs doing, but you can just say no and walk away.

Most things that are advertised as free are in fact free, you just have to have the self discipline to walk away. Like Kwikfit free brake checks, they'll check your brakes for free and quote you for any work that needs doing but you just take the quote say tahnkyou and drive away, they can't actually force you to have the work done.
