Td5 cam belt questions
Forgive my ignorance, but is it chain or plastic?

Also what sensible maintenance/replacement cycle should exist?

Chain. Should last the life of the vehicle and failures are very rare. It would be prudent to replace it around the 200,000 mark along with the the tensioner guides.
