Baby seats
I'm in need of a baby seat as our youngest daughter has just given birth to a little boy. The seat will only be used occasionally But still needs to be safe for its precious cargo. It will be fitted into a Freelander mk . Without going overboard what seats do I need to be looking at? As always its a minefield out there and it's something that I don't have a clue about. I'd consider a second hand one but it would have to pass the scrutiny of BB and be scrupulously clean. So friends your help and superior knowledge is required and greatly appreciated.

Barry,

Most of the reputable manufacturers have a fit guide on their website as to which cars their seats will fit in. These generally also include which seats in the car.

Personally speaking I have always gone for one of the big names when buying baby or child seats so Britax, Graco or Maxi Cosi. Over the years have had all of these makes without any issue (thankfully never put any of them to the real test).

In terms of second hand seats I wouldn't go there with one exception.
If you personally now the previous owner and history of the seat then fine (I do have an older child seat where I applied this theory). But even then I wanted to know that it was new when they bought it and how old it was. I knew they hadn't had an accident.

The structure of these seats is somewhat like motorcycle helmets. They are generally a hard shell (plastic) with polystyrene moldings which provide the comfort and cushioning in case of an accident. Polystyrene degrades not only with sunlight but also temperature fluctuations and age. I believe that they have a useful life ofabout 5 years. Therefore a seat your friend bought for their baby who is now 4 although never in an accident and bought new by them is not a good prospect.

I hope this helps and does not confuse.

Barry, if it's only occasional use, why not use the seat your daughter has?

Our little man arrived just over a year ago, and my parents whilst they have seats for the older kids just utilised our baby seat. Rule of thumb being he had to use one to get there in the first place so would have one to travel back in. They aren't in them for that long before they move up to the next seat size either.

We used a maxi-cosi with quick release base, but the travel seat can be used without the base as well.

Congrats on the new arrival Thumbs Up 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Thanks Rosco I hadn't thought about that it certainly, makes sense, it looks like Marilyn (BB) will be ferrying our daughter about when our son inlaw is at work for a while as she can't drive for six weeks.
