TD5 Wastegate actuator
My wastegate actuator has been sticking and despite plenty of WD40 it still keeps doing it.

Is it possible to replace just the actuator or is it a complete turbo replacement? Cant seem to find one on the web???

Waste gate actuator has big spring that hold wast gate valve shut, as the turbo compresses boots inlet air the Waste gate actuator moves the valve open to dump exhaust gas to readjust boost out Garrett is about the only place you will get one from USA

Try a good penetrating oil like liquid wrench or something similar. WD is NOT a very good lubricant or penetrant. I guess the one that is sticky is not the actuator but the valve it self. Try disconnecting actuator from the valve, than check if the valve moves freely, if not use some oil and wiggle it till it's free. I used few drops of engine oil.

On my old td5 it wasn't the actuator that acutually stuck it was the valve on the end inside the turbo that had from what I understand had coked up. I removed the heat shield. Undid the actuator rod and then put a set of mole grips on the arm and along with a lot of penetrating oil kept slowly moving it back and forth. It took about 20 minutes. It has a lot more movement than you think. After about 15 mins it was quite free then it it suddenly free'd up even more. Obviously do it whilst its cold. One of the turbo heat shelf mounting bracket bolts can be a pig to undo so it is easier to drill out the 2 rivets on the shield where it attaches to the bracket and either re-rivet or bolt it on when re-fitting

I've just had the same issue with the waste gate but managed to get the arm moving without removing the shield. I was going to remove it but the 10mm headed bolt on the turbo/manifold I feel would have sheered off. I did try but I didn't want another job. Good idea about drilling out the rivets Bps. Mike

Just on the back of this, would I be correct in saying to correctly adjust the thumbscrew on the arm would be as follows.....
Wait for the engine to be cold..
Tighten thumbscrew until all play has gone..
Then give it another half turn to allow the actuator spring to put a bit of tension on the arm..

Well I did what I suggested and it worked. Truck seems quicker off the mark so possibly the waste gate wasn't totally closed when it was seized. Mike
