What do you mean by illumination?

Jim, why did you lose your diff lock light ? The switch is there unless you fitted a later disco 2 example.
If so that's a lesson that the OP can learn from. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

My transferbox was out a v8 disco, so had a slightly different casing without the plugs. You could swap the casing over as they are interchangeable. I just taped up the plugs on the defender and lefts as. I'll know when I'm using the diff. The other missing plug relates to the low range map, making the throttle pedal less sensative, again something you can drive round👍

Is there any issue if the new box comes from an auto disco?

IIRC there are a few issues with some variants. I think I'm correct in saying that some disco 2 boxes don't have the internals for the diff lock

Like the top end quietness/reduced revs at speed.
Dislike riding the clutch more upon takeoff. Need to map it to help this, i hear. |

Had a 1.2 box out of a Range Rover classic ( so you get the viscous centre diff ) in my TD5 90 auto for years now and it is a great mod to do. As said above just a bit heavy and fiddly to do but simple enough.

Having dropped the whole gearbox/tcase assembly on mine once, do you have to drop the lot, or can you just drop the tcase off the back of the gearbox?

I find it easier to remove the t-box first, then the main box.
If you have the luxury of a four-post lift and a tall transmission jack it might be quicker to do them together, but the whole thing is brutal to manoeuvre on your own. |

Dropped the whole assembly, on the floor, in the rain, and back in in a day! Did have an enginer crane poking through the passenger door admittedly and holding through the trans tunnel. Also had 2 helpers! |
