2008 2.4 tdci clatter clatter clatter - stopped
Hi

I've a 2008 2.4 tdci that has stopped. There was a clatter coming from the engine for about 10 seconds then it stopped altogether and now won't start.

The computer gives me fault code P029C which I believe is an injector fault?

Any ideas?

Well, removed injector no1, it was pretty oily Sad

I turned it over with the injector removed from the engine but connected up. It fired up and there seems to be plenty diesel coming through injector no1.

Not looking good is it?

Injecting too much fuel causing clatter from 'hydraulicing'.

I would never take a code as correct Exclamation It would indicate it is possibly fuel related....

I would do a leak off test, do a test run for 30 sec's
If one of the injectors is bad one of the cylinders will be full before that...

There are a lot of things that control the fuel side of things but and I would possibly suspect the SCV Whistle

I recall there was an ECU update around 2007/08 also related to this issue....

I am sure others will add to this... Caterham had a fuel issue similar to this I think.. 90 & Wolf

Yep, leak off test would be my next port of call.
Compression test would give you more to go on too. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Having removed all the injectors we found that the engine wont turn over by hand. I'm thinking maybe a dropped valve.

I thought you had it turning and firing with one injector out? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I did. It won't turn all the way over by hand though and that's with the injectors removed.

Only thing that comes to mind are the clips that secure the leak off tubes to the injectors as they are made of thin pressed steel like the part in the photo.
Difficult to see how anything of this size could get into the cylinder - the hole for the injector is only 8mm diameter or so and it doesn't seem likely that it would come through a valve without more damage?
Would be interested to hear your conclusions.

That was only part of it. The rest was found jammed under a valve, which was found at the engineering workshop we sent the head to, to have new valves fitted and re-seated. It looks like some sort of spire clip.

I can confirm that the part that made it past the valve was indeed small enough to fit through the hole.

My best guess is that it was dropped into the inlet manifold somewhere during a (fairly) recent EGR replacement.

Oh well, we will start putting it back together on Monday.
