My understanding is that extended bumo stops are used when you use extended springs with lowered shock turrets. This allows you to use standard length shocks. Without extended bump stops the shocks would be the first thing to bottom out. This would end up buckling them. Doing a proper lift with extended shocks should allow for full travel without the need for spacers.

Keep in mind that you are unlikely to be touching both bump stops on an axle; so it will be acting more like a pivot point - if a side can drop more because of extended shocks - even with longer bump stops the wheel can go further into the arch.
You certainly don't want a wheel to bind so much that it impedes progress. All that said I haven't run extended bump stops on my LR with 2" lift. Mark. |

Afternoon Marc. I used to have your exact setup. It is a superb setup too. The way Gwyn described it to me is that the bump stops have a number of functions; 1) prevent the axle hitting the chassis and if it does there is a rubber cushion to take the brunt of the impact. 2) to prevent the shock topping out and damaging it. 3) in cases of extreme articulation the bump stop can act as a pivot for the axle forcing the lowermost wheel downwards. In your case with the repositioned upper shock mounts there is little chance of topping out the shocks before hitting the bump stop even a standard one. An extended bump stop will (with the right spring setup, not too stiff) allow for the axle to pivot against it. Additionally as you have pin to pin rear shocks the force of topping out would be directed through the shock body, bush, pin and mount in a near linear direction. Whilst topping out is never a good thing at least your shock would probably survive. If the vehicle has a 2" spring lift with +2" shocks on standard mounts there is a good chance that with standard bump stops in the right situation for the shock to top out and break the remarkably fragile O-ring off of the shock body. This setup requires extended bump stops ideally. If the vehicle has a 2" Spring lift, -2" shock mounts and standard or +2" shocks then the risk of topping out is increased. In this case extended bump stops are absolutely required. This setup was really popular 10 years ago or so as it cheaply increased the amount of axle droop a vehicle could create. Since the advent of QT services weekender kit, Gwyns awesome setup, scorpion racings (equipe) setup the -2" shock mounts are much less popular. I hope this helps. |

Thanks Guy mjibex
It's all a lot clearer now. I'm going to take a spring out on the front & a bump stop then lower the truck to see if the shock bottoms out, then I will know for sure wether I can ditch the extended bump stops & replace them with standard ones. Marc |

for that setup yes you can. they are stop topping out of shocks, you wont need them. i have them on my truck cab which has a +2" lift spring, -2" shock mount with std shocks. reasons above as to why you need them.
