There are several members of the forum living in hot climates (not us in the UK at the moment!).
A couple of chaps live in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and they're having no problems at the moment. There are also plenty of Aussies that will be used to a bit of heat. The air conditioning works pretty well. I'm sure it's not quite up to modern car standards (not too much variability in setting) but it certainly works well at around 40 deg C and is infinitely better than previous models. Definitely buy it and enjoy it Welcome, by the way. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Make sure to check for any clutch and/or gearbox noise/rattling. Test drive it and make sure the gear changes are smooth and there's not too much 'clunking' in the drivetrain.
The aircon is very good compared to previous defenders, performance in sand is ok. But if you are looking for a vehicle to do lots of sand dunes, this is probably not it |

Hi there!!! WELCOME TO DEFENDER!
I live in SA, i bought my 09 PUMA 2.4 90 in MARCH 09 new. Since then i have done 77000ks and have had nothing but pleasure. I have been through the HOT rough african terrain with it, salt pans, Namid dunes, EVERYTHING!! There have been a couple of niggles along the way. Firstly some of these cars are prone to having oil leaks in the vacume pump seals, LR has come out with an upgrade and since then ive had no hassle.(a clear sign of this is oil present on the underside of the bonnet). So maybe have them check that. Another niggle is that in HOT conditions the Intercooler fitted to this car as standerd simply is not strong enough. You find on long up hills, it almost feels as though it loses power. I changed the intercooler and it is now INCREADABLE. It has more than enough power to conquer the Dunes, infact any situation you put it in. The service intervals set by LR are at 20000ks, if im not mistaken, and in my opinion, this is far too much, i do an oil change every 7000ks, and when the oil comes out its BLACK!! Maintanance is key, you maintain this car and she wont let you down. fan belt changes, maintaining the coolent, very important! My mates drive Land cruisers and thay simply dont come close when it comes to off road performance, the defender as standerd is better than a cruiser modified! The aircon works a treat, it is very effective and does not effect power. The 2.4 Puma defender is a GREAT car!! Remember, Land Rover have been off roading for 60 years, every other manufacurer, when it comes to off road, learned from land rover, they know whats cutting, no other manufacurer in the world has its Prime focus on rugged off road performance, so why buy anything else.... It will put a smile on your face every time you get into it!! I hope that this helped. Good luck and we hope to see more pics of you and her. |

I think transmission is the biggest issue to look out for, most of the common faults seem to lie in the clutch/gearbox area.
If you're new Land Rovers it might be worth asking someone more experienced to go along with you? In fact, I think it's only fair that I volunteer myself to do that. It's not fair for me to hog this nice cold weather. PM me and we can talk about my airfare! Seriously, take your time choosing the right vehicle, it'll pay dividends further down the line. And most importantly, enjoy it when you get it! |

Beware the obsession that soon grips you.
We got one a month ago and suddenly my interest in our (useless in snow) BM 335d has waned as my passion for the Landy increases! Might be partly the weather though - snow and ice so ideal for Defenders. They really get under your skin though - in a good way! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
