Brakes - strange
hi,

given the def a clean and I noticed the rear n/s disc looked rusty / shiny. like the whole surface was rusty except for something had dragged on it in a couple of areas. I wiped by finger across it expecting to feel a groove where it was shinny but no its all smooth - so good news there.

the strange thing is the dark area I thought was rusty was like dirty / muddy water? I don't think it's brake fluid but can't imagine what else it could be? any thoughts?

the only thing I can say is the brakes sometimes feel tight and other times less so?

so drove from home to work - dry all the way parked up and didn't move again. towards end of cleaning I noticed light / dark effect on the disc. the dark bit was some kind of fluid? couldn't be due to washing because of the circular grooved effect from disc rotating which clearly it wasn't while I was washing it?

all the others are fine.

1 disc or all 4, and have you got any fluid on the floor built up or any fluid leaks from that caliper?

other 4 ok.

I'll be having a good luck for brake fluid but unless it's started to happen just this morning then I don't think so - I clean the inside of the wheels almost daily and haven't seen anything.

the other thing I noticed and this is probably nothing but I also noticed the the pad retaining pin slides back / forth really easy like they've just been fitted - I'd have expected a bit of resistance / quite tight?

The disc doesn't look to be wearing normally. You have areas where there is clearly no friction between pad and disc and others where there is contact but the lubricant is preventing the pad from wearing cleanly so the worn friction material is just clumping up with the fluid. My assumption is you are getting very low torque from that brake.

My first guess is you have an inner caliper seal leaking, wiggle the caliper housing and move the boot (or the outer seal) it will have more fluid in it if it's leaking.

My second guess given your comment on the pad retaining pin is that your pad is not sitting flat against the disc. Though from the photo I would think that's unlikely. It would cause grooving and uneven wear of the disc.

how can I wiggle the caliper housing? and I didn't realise there was a boot?

could this be related to a foo parred abs controller by any chance? as with almost every f'IN problem it's intermittent but on numerous occasions I've had the feeling of the abs kicking in very slightly when slowing down normally / slowly?

The disc feels to be in perfect condition / nice and smooth, no hi/lo grooves.

I would tackle one problem at a time...... Ignore the abs till you solve the fluid on the disc. It shouldn't be there. So id try and find the source first.

I didn't know about your abs issue. Point me at that thread if you have one otherwise can describe in here. I can't see how they can be connected.

I described what I meant badly. If there's fluid leaking from the caliper it'll be behind the pads, between the pad and the piston, and down into the main piston seal. If you wiggle the pads about and get more fluid (it'll release it from the cavities in the parts etc) or you can see fluid you know you've got a leak.

I can't see another way for you to have fluid on the disc that evenly and that colour otherwise unless it's a leak. Others might have had the same before though.

Could it be copper grease that's been applied a little too liberally to the back face of the pads or indeed the wheel?

In any event, remove wheel, remove pads, give everything a good clean and reassemble dry. Run for a few miles and see if the symptoms return.

If yes then look further, if not then apply an appropriate about of copper grease to pads and wheel and you're sorted.

Be very careful with copper grease on a brake pad back plate. Its useful on the wheel mating surfaces if you keep it well away from the studs but really shouldn't be needed on the pad back plate.

Most greases de-soap at around 200 degrees or lower. Your brake pad back plate has the ability to reach above 500 degrees even in a normal dragging descent. Especially if you ever drive close to GVM.

But agree with supacat that's a potential source if someone has done it Neutral

I did the pads with copper grease about 12000 miles back and this is a recent issue so doubt it's anything to do with that?

How much did you put on it? Like, a very thin smear that you can barely see colour in or a "wodge of the stuff"........

It depends how much you put on.

There's a few possibilities developing really. Get the wheel off, take some pics, post em up we'll have a look see.
