2008 Puma 2.4 tdci curiosity
Hello everybody, ideas please.....every once in a while, my Defender (42000 miles) seems to loose power above 2000revs...it just has no oomph in it! No warning lights, no smoke strange noises or anything, it just goes totally flat! Has this happened to anybody else?

Sounds to me like the EGR Valve is sooted up and sticking/slow to react.

Does it only happen once the engine has warmed up? If so, another pointer to the EGR.

3 options;

1) A swap out which is around £100 for the valve, easy enough to change, but a bit of a pig to get your hands down to it.

2) Remove and clean it

3) Get a map that disables it. You can just remove/unplug/block but the engine light will be lit constantly.

Many people have different views on the EGR, I changed mine a while back as it was sticking open occasionally making it impossible to start until it closed. However, mine is doing exactly the same as yours, so I'm going to remove and clean this time. I'm not going to remove/disable it as I believe it has it's place. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the EGR valve it really is a consumable item but as I said can be salvaged by cleaning.

Do you get the usual self cleaning cycle 2 or 3 seconds after engine shutdown? The Chuga Chuga Chuga noise? If so, the valve is working, but might not be working effectively. You can disconnect it and go for a drive to see if the problem disappears. You will get the engine light come on with it disconnected, although maybe not straight away, but it's a good test. If you do disconnect it, make sure the engine is off first as you don't want it to disconnect it if the valve is open, I don't think it should be open at idle, but you never know.

Wow Great response thank you! I did have my suspicions about the EGR and given the total random nature of the issue that makes total sense....I'm going to go for the clean out option! Once again, many thanks!

looking at the pic above why does it look like there's another oil filter in drinks holder? (ie above the exhaust manifold)?

Andy - Before you do anything at all to it, it might be worth trying this too:

You'd be surprised what it can do and if nothing else cleaned everything through, keeps injectors clean and a little bit of a power boost too.
I'm running it right now as do some members permanently.

It would be worth checking that the turbo actuator is working correctly. A very common problem is caused by the wiring harness suffering chafing damage where it is in contact with the engine, and this can cause the actuator to park in one position.

With the engine stopped the actuator operating lever should be mid position. If it is parked at one extreme of travel (especially the top) you will get no boost. The symptoms will be much as you describe.

As Blackwolf said it's well worth checking out the turbo actuator.

I've got the turbo off my 2008 puma at the moment because of this exact same problem. My problem only really manifested itself on a long run when the vehicle had been driven hard

It's an easy enough problem to identify and usually caused by the vanes sticking. If you take off the little clip that holds the actuator arm on, you can see how freely the arm moves. It should be really loose. The other problem is the actuator itself playing up.

If you start the vehicle up and note where the arms position is, then when the problem shows its head stop the vehicle and pop the bonnet (leave it running) and if the arm isnt in the same position then your problems in there somewhere

Seconded re the Millers Diesel Treatment. Unless I'm kidding myself it has tweaked performance a little, and has made what was a noisy EGR progressively quieter. One wife - livid
