Hi all,
Looking for a bit of advice, I'm normally quite handy at diagnosing faults on vehicles and this being my third truck I've had a fair bit of practise! About a month ago I noticed a clunking from the drive train after accelerating out of a 2nd gear bend, it sounded a little like a knackered uj. I checked them on the vehicle and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, fast forward a few days and I was in 5th gear travelling at 40-50 ish and then with no warning it felt like the drivetrain locked momentarily and there was a bang. I pulled over at the next opportunity and checked underneath, no signs of anything failed. I drove it home and it was fine, drove with no noises. Few days later I pull off from the traffics lights and another loud bang and a drive line seizure for a moment. I then decided to take it off the road to look into the issue, took both props off and they look and feel fine with no play or tight spots. I then ran the engine and watched the transfer box outputs spinning and the rear output shaft was bent. Something that I'd not heard of before. Changed the transferbox for a discovery unit and then decided to change the differential oils and they were both clean with no sparkle. This leaves me where I am now, it's still seems to be doing it. Once again it's very occasional, and it doesn't seem as severe but bad enough. Any suggestions as to what it may be are welcome. I'm going grey at serious pace at the minute. Also unsure as to how I would bend the output shaft? Cheers |

I thought that aswel hence changing the fluids, I know it's no comprehensive but there was no metal in the oil at all but I will try and take the diff out on my next days off.
It's a post 2002 110 rear axle so just have to pull it out. |

Thanks for all the replies guys.
The handbrake is fairly loose and can't see how it would snatch being as it is but good thinking. Cv is also something still to check on the list but I'm leaving that down the list as it seems to feel central when locking up and not pull to one side. Which I would imagine it would if it was on one corner? Also I've had no issues when turning tight which when I've smashed one before I certainly got. It's not in diff lock and I checked that when fitting the new transfer box. The old one did have a lot of play when locked between the two output shafts. |

Some years ago I had a similar banging from the rear of a 300tdi 90 until one day the rear nearside locked up at 70 mph. which nearly took me off the road. It felt as though the rear brakes had locked on . Called a breakdown company who sent recovery driver who happened to be a Land Rover fanatic who thought it was the handbrake that had come on, that was not the case so tried to pull the 90 onto the vehicle and both rear wheels were locked. After disconnecting the prop shaft and find that both wheels were locked still it was off to my local independent who found that both rear stub axels seals had failed allowing road silt into the bearing which had failed and eventualy they seized . Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Update on the situation
I drained my gearbox to see what condition the oil was in. It still had plenty in and wasn't in too bad condition there were some small filings on the drain plug but nothing of any size. Here's the evidence........... Click image to enlarge I continued to look round the vehicle and found a front wheel bearing that was graunching. It looked fine but sounded and felt terrible. I fitted a new one and it's not done it yet so touch wood it's sorted but still taking it steady. Work car park shot too. Click image to enlarge |

I miss my truck, I've not driven her for about a month and she's sat on my drive waiting for some work ready for its mot. The best bit is that the mrs is begging me to fix it. Keeper.
