MOT's and Seat Belts
The Defender is having it's MOT on Tuesday.

What's the situation with seatbelts.

Looking ours you can see that they have over time been caught between the door and the latch and it would be fair to say that they aren't in 100% condition.

I can take a photo if people want to see. It's certainly something that's been done over time and of course the car did pass it's last MOT and although we didn't own the car then, I'd put my money on the fact it would have already been showing signs of wear/damage. 2015 Audi Q3 Quattro S Line Plus 184 TDI Stronic

Morning Catherine. Are the edges frayed? Dampness can also make the material webbing look 'tired' with fading. If it is just signs of 'greying' (difficult to explain) a little boot polish will make them look like new (dependant on where the fading is of course as you wouldn't want it on your clothes).. Just to add I am certainly not advocating the hiding or disguising of faulty seatbelts, if you've any doubt and the garage is local go and get an opinion first perhaps if convenient.

Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

If it is only cosmetic damage and the belt is not seriously weakened then it should pass the MOT they may of course advise on the condition.

Was your car not MOT,d before you bought it ? I work in the used car trade and it is normal policy to MOT any car we sell if it has any less than 6 months remaining.

If you seatbelt is "fluffed" on the edges running a cigarette lighter along the edges will burn off the frayed bits ! If you have any doubts about your belts you should off course change them, who knows you just might put them to the test one day !

Let us know how you get on Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 90 XS

Mine got caught in the door latch a few times and I brought some of those cheap seat belt pads the boy racers have to make them think they've got full race harnesses on and placed them at the bottom near lact to give some protection Thumbs Up It's good to be back from the dark side

Yes they have got frayed bits and the greying on the surface.

I think it's cosmetic personally. 2015 Audi Q3 Quattro S Line Plus 184 TDI Stronic

I had to change the drivers seat belt on mine as the year before it had been an advisory and the examiner checked it when I went to book the M.O.T. . It had a lot of light grey marks but not cut or fraying but the examiner said it would fail the test. I think it depends on the examiner and how bad it looks whether they pass or fail it. It not a hard job to swap the old one out and fit a new one. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

From the MOT Inspection Manual:

Method of Inspection:
Examine the condition of all seat belt webbing for cuts or obvious signs of deterioration. Pay particular attention to webbing around anchorages, buckles and loops.

Reasons for Rejection:
a. cut or damaged sufficient to obstruct correct operation of the belt or significantly weaken the webbing
b. stitching badly frayed, not secure or incomplete
c. which has obviously been repaired

You might be surprised to know this was not a fail:

That seat belt should have (in my opinion) failed the MOT. However a lot of the MOT is down to the individual MOT tester and how thorough he is during the test.

Seat belt webbing is polyester and the webbing is rated at 2,000 kg IIRC (I have a 50 metre reel of it sat by my sewing machine about 2 metres away from where I am typing)

That photograph shows damage spreading out over at least 20% if not 30% of its width so would have significantly weakened the webbing. Edge damage to webbing in some ways can be worse then damage in the centre of the webbing.

Discolouration of webbing can be signs of UV degradation or chemical attack.

In the event of a serious impact your seat belt is what restrains you into the 'relative' safety of your seat. A seat belt is a sort of an 'insurance' so is it worth skimping on? If in doubt change it.

I have seen what used to be a pretty girl. She was not so pretty after going through a windscreen face first. She had just taken her seat belt off moments before the crash happen to reach something.

On reading the above post.

I`ve done recovery work and repairs on vehicles, in which seat belts were and were`ent worn.
Picking bits of brain tissue out of dash boards is not nice.
If in doubt change it. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

But not in this case - the guy thoroughly examined it and came up with this assessment:

"The damage is 15mm across the breadth of the belt and the remaining webbing is 30mm of good quality webbing completely un-damaged, so this is how I decided to make my decision because I can use experience in my judgement because VOSA expect me to do that, but I can't do a load test to see if the belt is significantly weakened, so to me as a minimum standard I decided that 33% of the breadth of the belt was damaged, thus leaving 67% of good quality webbing without any damage present, therefore I could not say as a minimum standard examination that the belt was significantly weakened when so much of the belt was remaining in tack.

I don't like the idea of passing a seat belt in this condition anymore than anyone who said it was a fail, but if VOSA disagree and I have given them a copy of the evidence, then they cannot say that I did not use experience and understanding in the decision I made based on the new reason for rejection, which I feel is not as good as the old one in my opinion."

Shocked

Quote from MOT forum member "on last refresher instructor said on this type damage to a belt pass and advise as long as it meets all other requirements. if the damage was lateral it is a fail "

Although I agree with your advice - you'd have to be an idiot to leave a belt like that in your vehicle & the example serves to reinforce what many already know - an MOT pass does not necessarily mean your vehicle is safe to drive.

Seat-belt protector sleeves
These are pretty good (part No. 8510403).
Took a while to figure out how they fit Smile
If you secure the angled end of the sleeve to the belt retainer using the supplied cable tie it pushes the belt slightly forward and away from the striker - Genius!
