Scotland 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Tamar Blue
Seat Rattle / Movement
Hi,

Been trying to trace a rattle and have narrowed it to the front passenger seat (90 HT Puma).

Had a look at the weekend and tightened the 4 bolts mounting the seat frame to the seat box - run this morning says this didn't cure it!

One thing I did notice is that one of the seat runners has more up/down play in it than the other. How do the two parts run over each other - e.g. is it ball bearings in a plastic holder or something more crude? I'm wondering if the play is a sign of something that is worn out or broken. None of the large screws holding the seat to the runners looked to be loose, but if I hold my hand and apply pressure to the back of the seat, the rattle stops!

The extra play is most noticeable when the seat is fully pushed back - it's the rear nearside runner seems to be able to move up and down a fraction whereas the other seems solid.

Has anyone got a list of things that they've solved for squeaky seat?

Ideas appreciated!

Cheers,

Fish.

Mine rattles in its track in the same way that you describe.

I have two solution which I use according to circumstances. Firstly, if I am alone, turn up the music. This covers a multitude of Defender-related noise problems and makes driving much less worrying. Secondly, I install SWMBO in the passenger seat. Even the relatively low mass of SWMBO stops the rattle but this approach does sometimes lead to other noises, some of which can be just as irritating!

I am not aware of any sophistication or adjustment in the tracks themselves. It has been in my mind, when I get round to it, to see if the tracks can be forced further apart or together to make them stiffer, or failing that a biff with a brass drift and a lump hammer to tighten the track. In an ideal world there'd be an adjustable gib strip to take up any slack, but you probab;y need a Rolls for that.

Similar experience here on a 65 plate 110 xs utility with the premium seats, its driving me bonkers, the drivers seat rocks due to the runners having too much clearance, passenger side similar but not to the same extent.
Both seat frames are being replaced under warranty, technician at Guy Salmon Bristol didn't quibble, NormanD WE191

I had similar on a 65reg with standard XS seats. Passenger was fine, drivers noticeably rattley. I asked dealer to have a look when it was in for some warranty work and they changed it without any further questions.
