2016 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Keswick Green
Sounds completely made up to me, based on the fact that there is an amber/red DPF warning light on the dash for when you need to keep driving to allow an active regeneration to complete.

2,500 miles does seem very short though. I did once see the oil service light before 12,000 miles. I would still get the oil changed though (or DIY it) Thumbs Up

It was serviced at 7,300 miles and it dod 9,900 when light came on. Ive now done about 500 miles since it came on and its not come on ONCE since i did the drive to london.

So
First long drive in ages to london - didnt come on
Second long drive from london to portsmouth - not come on
Drive from santander to san sebastian through pamplona to zaragoza.... never not even once

I think taking it to the dealer once im back is a reasonable shout. It would be an utter ballache to do it now and totally unreasonable if they invalidated your warrenty (would have a lawsuit on their hands). Im going to email landrover knutsford whove always been ace and just book it in for a check when i get back in a week or so.

Fwiw... the car since doing those long runs is driving FANTASTICALLY! So i think it probably just did need a good run.

Checked oil level and everything else and all looks fine too.

My oil service light has come on after 3500 miles. Car was 6 months old at the time.

2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 SW Corris Grey
Mine came on yesterday after a blast up the autoroute and back. Normally I only do short trips in it so I wonder if that has anything to do with it?.

Cars only done 11,148 Kilometres (6927 miles) since new and it was at 5223 Kilometres (3245 miles) when I bought it last May. Oil and filters were changed by the Indy dealer when I bought it at my request so its only done 5925 KM (3682 miles) since then. Prior to that it had an oil change by JLR in Italy at 4294 KM.

Oil level is fine.

According to my paperwork from the original JLR dealer in Italy, its due its first service at 30,000 KM, is that right? I think I'll just book it in anyway, never mind the low mileage. Better safe than sorry.

This scenario has just happened to me, too - after approx 2.500 since previous service. I found similar stuff about the dpf:

Taken from the workshop manual:

"Diesel Particulate Filter Side Effects
The following section details some side effects caused by the active regeneration process. Engine Oil Dilution Engine oil dilution can occur due to small amounts of fuel entering the engine crankcase during the post-injection phases. This has made it necessary to introduce a calculation based on driving style to reduce oil service intervals if necessary. The driver is alerted to the oil service by a message in the instrument cluster. The DPF software monitors the driving style and the frequency of the active regeneration and duration. Using this information a calculation can be made on the engine oil dilution. When the DPF software calculates the engine oil dilution has reached a predetermined threshold (fuel being 7% of engine oil volume) a service message is displayed in the instrument cluster. Depending on driving style, some vehicles may require an oil service before the designated interval. If a service message is displayed, the vehicle will be required have a full service and the service interval counter will be reset".

SO - I'm going to change the oil to be on the safe side.

Mine came on at about 3500 miles from new, which coincided with the 12 month service so it was done anyway. I hope ot doesn't come on again in 3500 miles!

As Jellybean highlighted the indicator comes on as the ECU has determined that it needs the oil changing. This is based on it's reading of the sensors and predetermining a set driving pattern which is conducive to high levels of oil dilution. Short trips do mean more active regen cycles and I would estimate it is this that the ECU measures to predict the oil dilution. There isn't an actual sensor to measure oil dilution only a set of parameters which the ECU is set to operate from, you could have more or less within a small margin unless you have another major issue.

IMHO I wouldn't ignore it and do an oil / filter change ASAP and reset the light it is a simple DIY task. After all oils and filters are cheaper than engines. I do a 20 mile round commute each day and I had a light on at about 8,000 miles since last service.

Old thread.... but an additional observation that would be good to clarify with other members.

I fully understand that an oil service light on a 2.2 puma is triggered by the ECU calculating driving style, active regenerations of the DPF, miles traveled etc. Based on that it believes the engine oil is likely to be 7% diluted with diesel and therefore needs oil and filter change. Then counter reset, either via the obd2 port or the pedal method.

However I’ve also noticed that exactly 12 months to the day of first registration of the vehicle the Oil service light will trigger if the counter has not been reset during that 12 month period. I normally change my oil every 5k-6k miles or approx at 6 and 12 month periods. A couple of years ago I only did 4K miles in a year so did not change the oil within the 12 month period and therefore did not reset the counter and the oil service light came on exactly 12months from the date of vehicle registration. This year I’ve only done 2850 miles in 12 months so not done an oil change or counter reset in 12 months and again on the day of registration the oil service light came on. This just can’t be coincidence so I was wondering if any other members had noted similar patterns ?
Now the registration date may be a red herring, it may be that the ECU recorded the first counter reset and that happened to be on the registration date and it calculates 12 months from that every time , or it just calculates 12 months from the last counter reset. But it does also indicate that the oil service light will come on for two reasons. 1. because the ECU has calculated 7% diesel dilution 2. because it’s been 12 months since the counter has been reset or 12 months from a date that’s been recorded in the ECU. I.e registration date or first counter reset date.

Looking at this and other threads members seem to also notice that the Oil service light will trigger after 12 months if there has not been a counter reset during that period.

Ps when the light comes up I do change the oil and filter plus if appropriate air filters, fuel filters, gearbox, transfer box, diff oil, brake fluid etc etc . I seem to spend more time under the truck than in it Smile

I change the engine oil myself every 10.000km from new.
190.000km today
The oil service was on every approx 20.000km and I reset it myshelf every time.
But this time it is only after 12.000km.
It is 3.000km after last oil change , so I do not worry
It is also one year after last oil change on
But could be because with Covid 19 and a lot of travel I made normaly , but not this year ...
Philippe current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and
again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today.

Hi Ianh -

Same situation for me. Bought mine new in Apri 2015, oil service light came on at Feb 2015. Dealer was surprised because it implied that they had not reset the counter right before delivery. Since then it comes on every 12 months like clockwork and I change the oil then (once per year). I have averaged 8000 miles per year and while its a little longer than some advocate, im happy with it. Never seen either of the DPF lights.
My understanding is the service message comes up at the earlier of 12 months or 20'000km. My 5 years of obeservation lead me to speculate that its a little unusual to get to 7% diesel contamination. There is certainly some contamination (as the oil level never drops) but 7% seems like it would be quite a lot..
