Chatting with some colleagues at work today and the subject of vehicle running costs came up.
I'm never going to win this one but it got me thinking about what I would replace my 110 with if I absolutely had to. So for those of you who currently have got both or have had both, which was cheaper to run? Both would be the diesel discovery (can't stand petrol engines) Obviously there will be a huge amount of variables but I think most people have a good idea of what there truck costs on a monthly basis. It would be used for daily driver doing about 26,000 a year so its worth considering! Defender residual values are much better - lower depreciation
Tyres - wow - Defender much cheaper Road tax - another wedge saved MPG not wildly different No brainer - 110 much cheaper Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I've had both Defenders and Disco 3/4. I happen to love them both but have to be honest and say that if I were travelling 26,000 miles a year and a good percentage of that was motorway then it would have to be the Disco. If you want miles per gallon then go for the Disco, if on the other hand you prefer smiles per gallon then definitely the Defender. Sorry it's not a lot of help but you can't go far wrong with either IMHO. Defender 90XS SW

I'll stick my head above the trench here and throw a stick in the spokes...... The D2 if still made would still outsell the Defender (because it was better) and a better all round vehicle in every way. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I had a feeling the Disco's would be more expensive to run.
Hopefully it would never come to it as I love my 110 ad would hate to part from it it was more an exercise in what if? Interesting to see other peoples experiences with them though Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

I agree with you there red-dot, those discos were fantastic.
In my opinion pig ugly, the best thing other than Defender to come out of LR was the Disco 3 bodyshape but the vehicles themselves were great. I used to mow a field with a V8 disco2 which which was great fun, till the owner picked up a ton sack of ballast with it and broke its back. Then swapped to a Td5 metropolis version but he never got the idea with vehicle maintenance and it was run into the ground after about 6 years of abuse. I bought the 2nd last ever D2 commercial and ran it for four years without fault other than wet carpets and a twig in the heater fan. It was a simple vehicle unlike D3/4 and even with the extra weight it would go anywhere my 90 would with confidence. My local LR outlet reckons they could still sell them due to the enquiries they get for clean used examples. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I don't have a Defender of my own to compare with, but I would concur that a D3 is likely to cost more. More comfortable @ 26k a year though... Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

D2 was replaced by the freelander2 isn't it same size. Plus probably better off road. The overhang on the rear of a d2 is rather long.
Had a D3 and was great apart from being the size of the moon. 110 is my daily now and does want I need and cheap to fix. |

Wrong i'm afraid. The FL2 replaced the FL1 and the D2 was replaced by the D3. Simples! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Run a 2014 Disco 4 commercial + 2015 Defender utility. Disco is miles better on fuel and being honest miles better at everything else as well inc towing etc Defender is only top on one thing nostalgia!!

This is relatively straight forward. Ignoring residuals and initial purchase price, just running costs, the D3/4 is far more expensive.
1. Brakes - the Disco is heavy and eats discs and pads. On 26k you might be lucky to make it to the next annual service on one set of pads. 2. Bushes - depending on the age/mileage they wear bushes out faster. 3. Tyres - same thing 4. General reliability - whilst they both might suffer some reliability issues, the Defender is much easier to fix yourself so reduces dealer repair bills. That said, 26k per year is a lot of miles and whilst I like the Defender driving seat, for that many miles I'd be searching for some thing more comfortable New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info |
