Did you disconnect the tow socket to rule it out? Ray

The headlight relay, as opposed to the dim/dip relay, is common to both headlight and fog light circuits, so that may explain the 'connection.'
I'd wager it's an earth within the binnacle area. It might be prudent to get your circuit tester out and check each of the circuits below. Click image to enlarge |

Sorry, R10. (No 75) is the headlight relay
No 70 is the light switch. Hope that helps. |

In terms of checking the earths, do you have a multimeter, 12v lamp or similar?
Can I just check..... Did you replace the 4pin head light relay or the 7pin dim/dip relay? The 4 pin head light relay is energised by the ignition feed via fuse 15 irrespective of the position of the light switch. You should hear and feel it click in when you turn the ignition on. Is this happening? |

It was the dim dip I replaced and it's the one that buzzes ? I will check the other one tomorrow in day light .

OK, assuming the headlamp relay is ok (tomorrow), the dim/dip relay is energised via the first position on the light switch.
As you move the light switch to the second position, the dim/dip relay should remain energised. The only difference is that you'll now have a feed via the headlamp relay (energised via ignition ^^) to the electronics within the dim/dip relay. I suspect (based on the fact that nothing else has changed) that the problem lies there. The trouble is there are so many interconnections between the column switch, fog light switch, head lamp relay and dim/dip relay that it'd be difficult to fault find remotely even with a diagram! If you do have a circuit tester or lamp, I'd just take your time and work your way through the wiring diagram. You'll know where you'll expect 12v at the various positions, and you'll be able verify the integrity of the earths (generally black wires). It is also entirely possible that your 'new' dim/dip relay is duff. The fact that your fog light switch is illuminating the head lights is suggesting there's a back feed or bad earth somewhere..... I wonder, are there any forum members close to you who could assist and maybe even swap relays etc. as a process of elimination? Preparing for your MOT is stressful so we'll hang on in here to try and assist |

Google dim dip bypass should give you an idea if it's working

Thanks ever so much Srebble, that's why I like this forum so much.
I tried the dim dip bypass thing and that didn't work ? Interesting ! I have s multimeter and will have a go after work I suspect the earth thing ? Does the fact the dim dip bypass doesn't work add to things in anyway ? Cheers Tank |

In some respects the fact that the dim dip bypass didn't work does help.....
If you shorted out pins 2 and 8 on the relay base and it still didn't work then it points us towards the column switch and the headlight relay (assuming the new light switch isn't duff!). As agreed earlier, we need to verify that the headlight relay is energising via the ignition and fuse 15. If it is, then it could be that your column switch is suspect. We will get there! |

Thanks Disco Mikey, will try the earth thing first as I have been given some other advice on that. If that doesn't work, you might get a visitor hahaha !
