Tow sockets wires can corrode in the back badly, I'd disconnect the grey plug under the drivers side rear arch above the rear crossmember which would eliminate the tow socket wires while trying the side repeaters again and see what happens. If it's still the same simply reconnect the grey plug so the tow socket is all back together then we'd need to think of something else but if they work it means you need a new tow socket. Ray
