United Kingdom 1984 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Portofino Red
1984 110 CSW
First off appoligies if this first post is an epic one !! Decided to do it once ive finished most of the stuff which I have now.

Anyways used to have a 1989 90 HT which was ok but It was lifted, Steel wheels with MTs ect ect ect. I wanted something a bit more tame and able to carry more people as I had two front seats then two jump seats in the back but no room for anything if anyone was in the back. After doing a full day at Land Rover Experience Scotland in a 110 the wife agreed that a 110 would be a lot better ( She drives a D2) so started the search for CSW's Fook me are they expensive. My budget was 4,500 ish and I didn't want to have to do any MAJOR work on it for the first year atleast ( Yeah you will see how that turned out!!) So Td5s were out, Even most 300Tdi were out as wanted stupid money or were modified more than I wanted. Anyways on facebook some one was asking about 110 for sale and another person said they had one. It didn't meet what the original poster wanted but it seemed good to me and local which is a rarity on the East coast of Norfolk!

Went and had a look it was a 1984 110CSW in Masai red. Body work is aged as expected but not too many mods and bar a 300Tdi mated to a LT77 everything else was stock. Had a look and a drive and it had a couple of niggles but after some thinking and talking managed to get it for 3,500. So there we are I now had 3 Land Rovers !!! But the 90 HT had to go so got rid of that not before removing the Winch, Winch Bumper, Sump guard and NAS tow step. Now it was time to get going on the 110. First off was fit the NAS step as well as WIPAC LED lights and sort out some of the niggles. On closer inspection it turned out the chassis was like new if not new BONUS. Only bad areas was both seat boxes needed replacing so ordered new from YRM ( My soon to be bank account!!!) I also found out the Discovery wheels fitted were not rated for 110s So I know had to get some new ones. I narrowed it down to Boosts, Sawtooth or Dual Finish so I showed a pic to the wife and she chose the Black Sawtooths. Now I needed tyres. I remember seeing some I liked at my local Steeler on a New fender so did a search and found them to be the Continental Cross Tracs. Ordered them and called up LR one Saturday morning when I was over near them to ask about the Sawtooths in Black and they had them on the shelf!. So 30 mins later I had new wheels.

I now drove her around for a month or two ( Work Month on Month off in the Middle East ) I decided it was time to start putting my plan into action. So off to the Raptor Engineering Website and ordered a Dash, Binnacle , Binnacle mount and cubby box. Then onto MUD Stuff for the Carling Switches. The previous Month I had been talking to Exmoor Trim about their G4 material. They had sent me some samples and I liked them. So I ordered a Pair of Elite Mk2 Fronts. 2x Classic High backs and 1 Classic Low back for the 2nd Row and two Jump seats all in G4 Trim with Red stitching to match the Masai Red, also ordered a Full carpet set. I also wanted a roof console. The Mudstuff one looked ok but the Terrafirma one fitted the bill better ( This was to be a bad choice as it looks and feels cheap and was a Censored to fit. Only reason I still have it is the storage is more than MUD) Well any one who knows early 110s will know the Headliner is different so this meant I had to get a new headlining Luckily some one was selling a full set for around 200 delivered so got that on its way.

I came home off a trip and did a Full service which reveled most levels to be a bit low. I also fitted the new roof lining and Terrafirma roof console ( Really anyone else thinking of getting one think twice and try and get to look at one fitted and speak to the person who fitted it) Also fitted the Raptor Engineering kit. As expected and previous experience with the Dash it is brilliant. The cubby box is HUGE Could easily hide a -1yr old child in there and lock the lid Wink

Anyways come back in October for 5 weeks and think I will spend 2 weeks on 110 and 3 weeks on the bathroom ive been promising the wife for past 2-3 years. YUP you guessed it. All 5 weeks every day all weather out on the 110!! I knew I had to do the seat box for the MOT so got started on that but none of the write ups mentioned that on 110s you had to remove the Seat box from the vehicle! Thankfully after a quick call to YRM it became clear so I got on with that. Then having a poke around I found the hidden bit of one C post was gone and the other would need doing in a year!! Well this is where things went from bad to worse. A PO had destroyed the load bed to get at the tank so the last PO replaced it with chequer plate. but he also replaced the bottom seat belt mounts with thick angle iron. Now I never liked this and was looking to change it. Well I relied that to change the C-post I would need to remove the upright. Well that meant removing the seat belt mounts which meant also removing the load bed. YAY ive now got an excuse to get it back to stock. So off I go onto the YRM site and order new upstand, Load bed, C-Posts a supports. So I rip all the old stuff out to find there was no under tub fore and aft supports !! I also had to cut the old retaining plate off the back door so another shop on YRM got all those bits coming. I wasn't sure how to secure the bed but looking at various posts and that decided to use M4 rivnuts so I could remove easily in the future. I also decided to send the 2nd row seat bases and mounts to get Powder coated so they are nice and shiny for the new interior.

So I replaced all the rear and C-posts. One day I come out and find 1- rear axle is leaking in the drum assy and 2- front swivel seal is gone. GREAT days away from MOT. So order the bits for that and whilst im at it decide to replace both rear wheel bearings and shoes. Now ive got to sort out the rear seat belt mounts, I manage to find the load bed parts on Britcar as a kit and the Outside lower mounts again at YRM ( I do believe I have paid their X-mass bonus this year!!!) Anyways FINALLY get everything sorted. Now time to run the wiring for everything to the dash etc. Thank god for multi cable is all I can say. 13 core from aux fuse box under Drivers seat and 7 core from battery box then twin core to various areas. Once that is ran I then fit all the New carpet ( Not a bad kit but would try and do a dry run the seat box carpet and possibly do it in reverse to what they say. Everything fits bar a few little areas which is to be expected with a universal carpet but im more than happy with it. Only advice I would say is buy an extra 3 cans of glue. Your meant to get 1 for the front 1 for the rear. I only got one but eneded up using 3 in total.

So now the new carpet is in and front seats ( haven't had time to drill holes for the 2nd row) Its off to MOT. and It fails!!! on two silly things. 1- Brake lights not working 2 - Front brake imbalance. The weird thing is as the tester takes it out the brake lights work but then don't. Been going there for ages so speak to the tester and I quickly pop home ( luckily less than a mile) have a look and it turns out the brake light switch has not lock nut and seems to have wound out, Screw that in A-OK. and I know whats up with the fronts. When I had the caliper off to do the front swivel seal I thought the pads didn't go back down as far, Whipped the wheel off tapped it a couple of times with a mallet and they moved down a bit. Nipped back to the MOT place and Yup all is good Very Happy Big smiles all round. I then spend the next couple of days wiring up the switches and getting my Nokian winter tyres fitted by a mate who also checks my wheel alignment on an all singing lazer rig. One wheel is out slightly so said I will get it sorted in February as its the Saturday before I go away and would rather fit new ball joints at the same time.

So that's us so far spent easily double on what I bought her for so she owes me about 9k lets say but Im happy and she is almost how I want her. Just a couple of bits to do when I get home this time which will be tight as get home 10 am on the 23rd and go away for new year to the outer Hebrideas on the 26th in the 110 lol . Just uploading some pictures to Photobucket and hope to put them up later.

Must also do a shout out to Exmoor Trim, YRM Paddocks and Raptor Engineering as I called them, emailed them and hassled them and they still did some deals and managed to get stuff to me quickly.

Sorry for the lack of response work month n month in the middle east and was away all my last trip in Scotland.
So before I went away in Nov and the first couple days back in Dec inc X-mas day was spent on the 110. Got the wiring finished inc the twin batteries and that. Went on hols to Scotland where the Passengers wiper decided it liked New Castle so flew off as we went past!!! 110 Was brilliant in the Outer Hebrideas and some how managed high 20s low 30mpg. Unfortlantly near the end the front prop failed so had to whip that off and drive around in Difflock. Spent a couple nights in Edinburgh on the way back where I had both Front and Rear props waiting for me at the hotel as well as new wiper arm. Used the wipers and poff smoke and heat coming from passengers corner of the dash. Whipped it out to find out the motor was fried. Managed to get it working. Then as we got on the A68 it failed. After an hour trying to fix it and several calls to local 'Specialists' who didnt have parts found a bloke hidden away in the middle of nowhere with a heap of Series and 90s' 110 and a Cuthbert. Great bloke had a second hand unit and after some playing got it working, for some reason the Park doesnt work no matter what we tried but didnt bother me as atleast I had wipers. That was me till this trip home!!!

Was out driving and suddenly had a box full of Neutrals! Got the yellow taxi home, Thought it was the clutch fork so ordered a HD one of them along with the clutch kit. Got it fitted by a local Clutch center who showed me that the release bearing had melted and failed!!!!!! Also the gearbox was only held on my 4 bolts!!! So they replaced them and found some others to fit. So now it drives alot quieter and the clutch is now a feather weight compared to before!!

Plan on trying to get the 2nd row seats in this trip but we will see what happens. Will try and remember to post some pics up later

Nice strip down and well documented with lovely new parts But have I missed something ?
I'm hoping that you cleaned , painted and waxoyled that messy chassis before the nice rebuild.

Cheers bud, Its kinda 50 50 on the chassis, It obviously got a re-chassis very recently and all that is on it is hardened Norfolk Mud/Dust which was cleaned off. The plan is to get it profesionally coated just need to get a min to decide who to go to and that.

Was only planing on doing the seat box then found the C-pillar and did the rear floor!!! Just the doors to get replaced and find all the leaks and plug them !!
