If it was a Photoshop exercise as you suggest, I don't think Gary (my friend & photographer, do check out his website) would spend +2hrs stood on a desolate beach, in the early hours, freezing his arse off.

You will always get a more impressive photograph of the Northern Lights than it is viewed by the human eye if taken properly. It's to do with the way the CCD detects the colours as is when the human eye corrects to what it expects.
This applies to cameramen that speak Yakka, Pitmatic or Geordie (even Makems) www.td5.org |

None! If you were at Norfolk imagine you were looking out over the sea and able to see a green glow, you would almost convince yourself it wasn't there but it would appear on a photograph.
However when you look at the photographs from Kielder Observatory they are loads better than the ones from Norfolk. The Kielder quality is hugely enhanced by the dark skies through lack of light pollution The Aurora in Iceland last week was about as good as Norfolk this week. www.td5.org |

Nitram17 - Obviously we've had an outbreak of "mass photoshopping" here in Norfolk

Always good to see a showing in the UK!
However, they cannot compare to the experience you get when you travel north where the whole landscape is illuminated by the intensity of the lights As already mentioned, a digital sensor is far more sensitive than the human eye, therefore you will always pickup more colours and brightness than you actually see, a lot of the time, you only get to see the green glow which your brain corrects to more a whiter colour. Sometimes, even in the midlands, if I take some nighttime long exposures you sometimes end up with a very faint view of the lights whereas you would never see them with your eye. Fab photos though! Remember last year when the UK was high alert? Imagine how gutted I was when I had put both my camera bodies in for a sensor clean when where I live was the most visible place in the UK to see them. I wasn't too gutted though as they were in for a clean in readiness for a trip to Iceland! - Album: Aurora Borealis - Iceland Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

So you are saying that the camera and the eye and brain produce representations of the world in different ways and its difficult to compare !i would say the person looking at the camera immage are two steps from reality..and now im confusing myself so i will dsign off saying its better to view the phenomena first hand in an area with little light polution and get the rush and remember that the camera distorts but so does the brain and the human memory and once the moment has passed you can never get it back in the original form.ps pick were great ! |

You've obviously got no idea just how valuable prime arable land is, far too good to waste on sheep. There's probably more people on JSA in the Tyne & Wear area than there are sheep down here! TT "Ease your worries, Clear-up your woes, Go into your garage & put stuff into rows." |
