Hi all, sorry to jump straight in with a problem (and yes, I have posted in the welcome section). And sorry if this has been covered, I did try the search function but am on mobile...
My defender has suddenly got the horn... Or might I say, alarm? About 2 weeks ago at 4am in the morning the horn started to sound continuously, not a broken beep, beep, beep but a single, continuous tone. In my panic I just disconnected the alarm sounder (not the BBUS module) but a sounder just above the n/s headlight and then the horn, level with the headlight behind the black trim surround. And yes, my neighbour's were all woken up, and yes I did skin knuckles! The next day I connected everything back up and all seemed fine, forget it I thought, must be a blip. Then, last night it did it again (at 11pm though so perhaps not quite as bad). I happened to knock the sidelight switch while I was opening the bonnet and with the sidelights on, the continuous beep stopped, and went back on again when I turned them off. Disconnecting the horn fuse had no effect, turning the ignition on had no effect and the only way I could get it to stop was to disconnect the sounders again. The horn now doesn't work on the stalk at all. (Have replaced the stalk this morning and still no horn). However, there is power at the connector when stalk depressed - I just wired a bulb up to it to see if it was getting power. History as to what I have done to the truck recently is as follows: New primary battery 2 months ago, JW Speaker headlights a month ago, and a good wash off of the underside about a month ago too. People I have talked to in the trade (I am in the motor trade) have suggested a dodgey 10as unit, an earth fault or a short somewhere between the dash and the horn. Your inputs, suggestions and recommendations would be awesome. All of my interior lights, immobiliser and alarm seem to be working as they should (apart from the horn!!). Many thanks, Doug. |

Thanks for the info guys... So basically run off of either a simple horn circuit or via the alarm relay then on to the 10as unit.
Hmm... |

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Hi all, thought I'd give a little update on this. I eventually had an auto electrician friend check out this fault, and he concluded that there must be an issue with either the wiring behind the dash, or the 10AS alarm unit mounted on the bulkhead. The decision was made to remove the dash and have a poke around... With that done I also sent the 10AS unit off to a specialist in Brighton for testing. No faults were found on the 10AS unit so that was waterproofed (cut up and sealed in a Tupperware box) and refitted compete with a condensation vent. After painstakingly going through all the wires behind the dash, again, nothing was found. With those two items eliminated from the search I turned my attention to the wing wiring. After seeing the condition of it all I pulled the harness and replaced with a new wing loom, after encasing the new loom in converluted tubing and fabric tape... (If it needs replacing, upgrade). This is actually when the fault was found, the connector in the wing (dash loom to wing loom) had suffered with water ingress and corroded to hell. I could have just cut and soldered the wires together but wanted to stay OEM so purchased a new connector and re-pinned all 14 connections... So far, no horn... Well, not on the Defender anyway. But of a long winded way of doing it but I have learned a valuable lesson, even if your head is saying, 'yes mate, definitely checked that connector last week', check it again. Hey ho. Whilst the dash was out I fitted two further washer jet assemblies and non-return valves. Best, Doug. |

Excellent follow up post. So many people just fix it and don't follow up so the rest on here can learn from it. Well done sorting it.
