Apparently the bloke who came up with the suggestion was mortified that it topped the list. Did it as a joke, but jokes are a dangerous thing with the viral machine that is social media watching everything posted on the interweb. I think Boaty McBoatface is a fantastic name for a vessel.
Who here honestly even knew we had these ships before this poll? It has caused a huge surge of interest particularly with the younger generations which will hopefully one day convert into more students going into sciences and technology. If the name of a boat helps then I'm all for it. Much better than some dusty dreary old name which is totally irrelevant and doesn't capture the imagination of youngsters. Lets face it, its not a war machine its not meant to sound imposing, adult scientists probably don't care what the name or even colour of the ship is as long as they have the facility to have one! Of your last sentence, as far as the first point is concerned I always find it weird that the Navy feel a ship needs an imposing name. Surely the guns and rockets are imposing. If it makes the Sailors and the Navy happy and feel tougher, well who am I to complain?
As far as the second point, I think antartic scientists are happy if they have a beard, a good woolly pully, and some ale. Not to mention some Jesus Creepers when they're back on ship, worn with socks of course. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

True but HMS Pointy Stick doesn't sound quite as battle ready as HMS Daring.
Having said that, most of them are named after rivers or Dukes so actually that point makes little sense Good points! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

I did a short exchange visit on HMS Beaver, 'back in the day'. We army types did have a chuckle. What the Americans would make of this little ship pulling alongside the Nimitz with a name like that, I have no idea.... Monsieur Le Grenadier

HMS Defender....presumably breaks down a lot. And if anything like the leaking on the land based version, must be a full time job to prevent her from sinking... Monsieur Le Grenadier
