Just noticed quite a substantial crack on the rear window. Now the truck has done just under 900 miles and all on normal roads. I assume the window must have been cracked since new. I read this can sometime happen over time due to spare wheel mounted to the rear door. But I have hardly driven the 90 so far. So I'm thinking to call up the dealer garage to have it fixed at their cost - anyone any similar experience? If yes, what was the outcome - did the LR garage covered the costs or did you have to pay yourself? If later, I may as well have Dave (VGS) to fit tinted windows.

Is it a scratch in an applied tint?
The rear glass will be toughened so can't crack & will just shatter into a million peices if broken. Keith |

Hi Keith, it's actually a crack, you can tell once you run your fingers over it and have a very close look from the inside. I'm really glad it hasn't shuttered into pieces so far then

Can you feel it from inside and outside?
If so you need to get some poly sheeting and gaffer tape over it pretty soon and a rapid visit to LR or a screen company! |

It's not laminated, it's a scratch.

It just looks deep - was there something on here about new Defenders not being able to be supplied with tinted rear windows - if so has it got a spray tint on it?

Went to have another look. Yep, can feel it from both sides. Also haven't carried anything inside that would actually touch the window so unless she scratched herself... As Keith said, it is deep though you can see it when you have a close look, tried to take another photo but it's too dark unfortunately. Also it wasn't there on Wednesday as I went to wash the car after it came from Zag and would have noticed when I dried her with chamois. Driving along the road in my 90 when it was about 11mts old rear window just exploded! Was selling the next week so just had it replaced by our local windscreen repairer at my cost. It was a frosty morning dunno the cause!

The very fact it is a piece of toughened safety glass that has a crack in it means it is faulty regardless of how the crack started.
Lots of photos and into the stealer for a new one please! Also I would tape a piece of polythene over both sides plus some duct tape over the glass 'cause when it does shatter it will make a mess and you'll be hoovering bits up for years! |

Thanks Keith, that's encouraging as I wasn't sure if it's sensible to ask the dealer garage to fix it.
I just happened to buy some polythene sheets earlier today so will definitely follow your advice and fix it on tomorrow. Won't drive her around either apart from taking her for a repair. MY15 Aintree 110 SW - for sale - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic82781.html MY16 Santorini 90 HT - sold |
