Suggesting that the old one was renowned for reliability - I doubt it.

‘that it will be “fairly different” from other models’, that is an ambiguous phrase, and in the context it was written probably means will look the same as all the other Land Rover models but might have different indicators.

The words ‘in actual body componentry’ is a superlative interpretation and reeks of spin, ‘body componentry’ in relation to what the model may look like tells us sod all!

I would have liked to have read that it will be “very different” from other models in actual body style, however as all Land rover models are morphing into lookalikes I will not hold my breath. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I know we read too much into any news of the replacement but Dr Ralf Speth...hasn't set the bar very high here...

Not believing that it is possible to make it in high enough volume...
and yet needs to offer general reliability... Shocked

Poor journalism...or low aspirations... Question

Some odd use of present and future tense in that article; "design and engineering now at the stage of development testing on road" and "will be based on the aluminium architecture of the new Discovery". Which is it?

No mention of it being a "Style-led urban Land Rover" though, which is good.

Hopefully we will begin to see a drip feed of Defender-shaped news. Plenty of question marks remain over where it sits, up against the premium RR and Disco.

Well coming from Ralf Speth, although he's not telling us much, it is at least coming from a "reliable" source. I doubt He'd say He'd driven one if He hadn't.
Hopefully, we may now start to get a few more dribs & drabs.

Everything I read from McGovern fills me with dread. The following interview regarding Disco 5 in the following link had an interesting line highlighted below

http://www.coolhunting.com/design/intervie...y-mcgovern

Quote:
How does this thinking figure into Discovery, especially since you've had to add about a half-foot of length and you targeted 'real-world' seating for seven people, and not just kids in the third row?

Well previous Discovery had been around for 12 years and had really become out of step with the rest of the brand. It was very polarizing, people forget that. People called it ‘brutalistic,’ which is a kind of architecture from the 1950s I quite like. Anyway, Discovery had more in common with old Defender. People want something more refined, something more in the direction of Range Rover and less overtly rugged. When there’s a new family of Defender it can go that way, but customers have been asking for Discoveries to be more premium. Discovery is about being incredibly versatile. It’s a family vehicle

I read that as expecting the new Defender to be comparable to the outgoing Disco 4 in terms of fit, refinement, spec etc..

Controversial thought:-

Disco 4 chassis and driveline, but wrapped into a more defenders shape......

Might explain notes about prototyping of defender, it could same as disco 4, but have slightly different mechanicals perhaps?

I'm betting that defender will share all disco 4 components and only have exterior body uplift. it would help keep development costs down.

Cheers
Andy

It does make sense and I think it incredibly unlikely that it will end up with different chassis running gear to the disco. Costs down through product line reuse.

I'd be happy if it ended up as a ruggedised disco 4. That was a superb vehicle. As long as it keeps the defender look.

My first disco 3 was manual, coil sprung, cloth seats and cost £24.5k new in 2005 with metallic and tow kit.

Something similar to that as a new defender would be superb and really everything is already available apart from the panels. Just us a lower spec 4 cylinder diesel to differentiate from Disco 5, less sound insulation etc to lower weight and refinement and job done.
