Diff Lock Dashboard Light
When I come out of diff lock and back onto tarmac the diff lock light in the dash takes a long time to switch off. Does this mean that the diff lock is still engaged even though I have pushed the lever out of diff lock or does it perhaps mean that the diff has wind up?

I am a bit wary about returning to road speeds over 40mph until I am sure the diff lock is disengaged.

I always thought if the light was on the diff lock is still engaged. It will be wound up and can't come out. I always try rocking backwards and forwards in first/reverse before driving normally to get it out.

Sometimes it does take a while for the light to go out, try reversing 5-10m that should sort it. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Yes I have tried reversing a couple of times and this has worked. Do I have to assume that a wound up diff will never un wind on tarmac until you have reversed?

It's not always a case of the diff still being on that keeps the light on you can be static engage and disengage the diff lock and the light can remain on. If you have wind up there are two ways to sort it, one being to jack up a single wheel station the other is to "bounce" a wheel off a kerb (both of these techniques are demonstrate in a military training film). You will only get wind up if you have the diff engaged when traversing solid roads where each wheel has constant traction. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Yes I guess this is the problem, because the light stays on there is no way of knowing if the diff has disengaged or is perhaps wound up, so you have to be wary about increasing speed until you can be sure. Just out of curiosity what is the effect on the diffs if you increase the speed past the recommended 40mph?

The light is operated by the position of the selector fork (in the transfer box) for the diflock. If the light is on, the diff is locked, irrespective of the position of the change lever.

If the light is off, the diff is unlocked, irrespective of the position of the change lever, unless of course the bulb or switch has failed.

Delay in the light going out simply indicates that there is some load on the difflock that is preventing it from disegaging. This may be wind-up, or it may be that the internal mechanism is stiff through lack of use.

There's one lane near me that has a 45° slippery slope up to a T junction with the solid road at the top. I can't get up the slope without difflock engaged, but then I have to do a sharp left bend on the road. I haven't come up with a way round the problem there, I have to drive on the solid road with the difflock engaged and it won't dis-engage for a while. There are no kerbs to bounce off either, I'd just end up in a hedge or a ditch Laughing

I don't go much on this bouncing off kerbs business, running one side on any non hard surface will help disipate any wind up and allow the difflock to disengage. Steve.
