Old Defender line
A friend of mine, may he ever hang his head in shame, is contracted to change over the old production line to its new purpose. He had started his job before the line had actually finished and has witnessed the final days and what has followed. JLR are very security minded, no problem with that, and there has been a few trundle down since the last official one. There are also some specials around mainly for reworking and he was allowed to take a photo of a couple of Defenders having a bit of work done on them yesterday. I think most will recognise them.......

Article in this months LRO say that they are going to adapt the line to restore Series 1 that they are buying from all over the world so people will be able to buy a factory restored version and some (10) of the staff are being retrained for that purpose. so the legend continues. Milestone Jeff

With only 10 or so staff and a limited volume output, i can't imagine much of the production line kit would be of use to them, a few jigs, dollies and specialist tools maybe.

I wonder what will be the price of a factory-remanufactured Series One. Sadly I suspect it will make them playthings of the super-rich and beyond the means of most of us.

I wonder if owners will be able to send their own vehicles there to have them re-manufactured.

+1.
SVR will be doing rebuilt LandRovers, on an individual basis. They will not need a "production line".

The whole point of rebuilding a vehicle is to actually build it properly for once, why would you want to let the clowns at Solihull have another go? Laughing

The article suggest that owners will be able to send their Series1s for restoration also. It suggest that they will start with Series1 but cold move to other Land Rovers model to retain the history. Jeff

I'm also sceptical that taking people from the old production line is actually the core experience or skill set to rebuild an old vehicle.

I hope they don't end up following the E type model and produce something that neither pleases the purists or adds to the marques reputation.
