auto express did a review in November 2011 I assume this must be a press car so early 2012 is a safe bet

The Type Approval (for the 2.2 model) is dated from 19 August 2011, and the Land Rover documentation (when it left Solihull?) for my vehicle is dated 16 January 2012. Somewhere between those two dates. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Interesting. I thought there would be a simple day when they all changed to 2.2.
There are quite a few defenders on 61 plates claiming to be 2.2 so they must be very early 2.2 or wrongly advertised. I guess the vehicle reg form will say 2.2 not 2.4 Thanks for all input Sib Bath UK 1952 80 inch 1973 88 inch 2018 Morgan plus 4 narrow body |

Mine is one of the very last of the 2.4's. The 2.2 was just starting to be manufactured, but I wanted a 2.4. To get one, I spoke with LR who told me the last five 2.4's on the production line had just been delivered to dealers. I chased round the dealers and bought mine in Wales (even tho I live in Scotland).
Mine was picked-up on 20th Sept 2011. So before Sept 2011 is likely to be 2.4, and Oct 2011 onwards likely to be 2.2 Cheers Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) Last edited by MartinK on 18th Feb 2016 11:40am. Edited 1 time in total |

Apart from the displacement, what differences are there between the two?

AFAIK (from the workshop manual?) MY2012 introduced: DPF, top speed 145km/h (2.4 was 135km/h, sorry what's that in mph?), LED switch lighting, internally ventilated brake discs; improved: ABS, door gaskets, sound proofing, clutch |

And the 2.2 has a fuel filler cap with a leash
the 2.4 did not have the leash For me I wanted to avoid the DPF, hence my chasing down one of the very last 2.4's off the production line. Were carpets not dropped as a standard on the 2.2's ??? Also the "County" and "XS" derivatives were altered? I also thought late 2.4's had the improved door seals, and later clutch? 2.2 MPG seems to be lower. "For me I wanted to avoid the DPF"
Me too. Of course, ours will be "disadvantaged" - LEZs, then banned altogether from cities - that bit sooner than 2.2s, but by that time I'll in any case probably be chugging along in a tiny zero-emissions fart-box. Peter |

Ha ha, improved door gaskets! My 2014 filled with water today crossing a ford much to the children's amusement. Granted, it came in a bit slower than my 300tdi, but not by much! |
