Wheel Bearing Maintenance Puma 2012
Hi guys,

Just after a bit of advice please on servicing the wheel bearings on a 2012 Puma 110.
I have not done wheel bearings on a defender before (i have on other vehicles), but I would really like to do the job myself so I can learn more and be more prepared should something go wrong out on the track.

Is there any parts that must be replaced if just doing a re-grease/repack on the bearings front and rear
? If nothing is worn of course.

Tools Required? 52mm hub socket? Circlip? 13mm 12 point socket for brake caliper?
Spec of high temp grease?
Torque specs on caliper and hub nuts?

TIA for any help and information.

Thanks Thor44,

That video is great instructional help, particularly if I need to replace bearings rather than just repack.

Does anyone know if the seal must be replaced with a new one for a repack? If so I will need to find a part number and track a pair down before I get into this Smile

You'll find the seals will get damaged on removal so replacement is necessary.
Don't forget to have some sealant for the drive flanges on hand( I use RTV).
Loctite the drive flange bolts after a good clean of the threads, some folk replace the bolts but I change them every 2nd strip down.
All the specs you need and more look like they are on this thread from a site a few off us are also members on...

Don't forget to grease the axle-drive flange splines after inspecting for damage.
I use Castrol High Temp wheel bearing grease on mine, same for the axle-flange and on my trailer wheel bearings.
If your retaining the single stack nut you will need to replace them too.
I use the 2 nut system with the original spacer and just do every thing up tight as no need to set preloads...

If you haven't slotted the brake pipe bracket then you'll need to disconnect it and therefore bleed it on reassembly. Slot it when apart so you don't have to do it in the future.

Drive flange gasket as above and keep an oil seal too in case you damage it on removal of the hub.
