Noticed today a crack in the roof metal, right above where it is joined to the windscreen frame.
Not sure if you can really see it in the photo, but it must be at least 1mm thick in places and about 2 or 3 inches long. What can I use to patch this? Not too worried about looks at it's so high up. Click image to enlarge |

I'm not seeing a crack from that photo, it actually look more like an impact from a stone or other object?
Got any more photos? |

It's definitely a crack, I don't remember hitting anything! I've got some scratches from bushes but nothing hefty to cause this.
Should I be worried about it structurally? |

If I zoom in I think I can see the rusty edged crack.
But are you saying that there is a trick of the light or something and NOT what appears to be a very obvious impact area with dent and loss of paint? Most people will naturally question whether they are linked. edit: added marked up photo Click image to enlarge Last edited by apt100 on 8th Feb 2016 11:06pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I think what looks like an impact is just where the light is hitting a very poorly done spot weld from the factory. The two bits of panel were obviously not properly together when welded which I probably the reason your now seeing it crack, if you were to weld it the roof would need painting so if it's just the possibility of water getting in your worried about then a tiny bit of sikaflex will sort it. If it's still under warranty you could let the dealer sort it. Ray

Just looked at the pic again and re-read the first post and have now seen the crack I'd just put sikaflex in that too but clean it out thoroughly with something like white spirit first. Ray

Nothing to wory about, i haven`t seen a Defender without a crack in that place.
It is the mastic that separates from the car Body. Just take some waxoil and apply it with a brush or your finger in the crack - best to do when summer nice and warm. |

Thanks to apt100 I can now see what the OP was talking about but not making that obvious!
Click image to enlarge It does look like the classic crack you can sometimes see around the guttering. Not sure if it's down to age related shrinkage or a more mechanical separation, or even a combination of them both. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Advice above seems correct - clean out and reseal with a good quality sealant. I'd actually rake it out a bit to get a larger surface area and deeper void for the new sealant to sit in. I would think that Waxoyl was not appropriate unless you used one of their underseal products. |

Time for me to step in and say they all do that sir Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Thanks Supacat, that's exactly what the issue is! Glad it's a known issue, I just couldn't find any reference to something like it before.
This might even fix the water coming in through the top of the door which I just assumed was the door seal. |
