It's certainly not just you. It is remarkably loud, a bit like the rest of the Defender

I totally agree. Often the first speed is too loud, but switching it off results in total loss of heating.
An additional resistor built into the wiring ought to do it. Anyone here know enough about these things to offer a suggestion? 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Thanks for the suggestion. Such wisdom could only come from the owner of a Series and an old Norton 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Definitely a million times worse on recirc but I almost never use that. Without opening the dash (which will happen, but not yet) I can't tell if it is due to corrugated ducts or something else. Cheers, Guy.

Travelling home from town in traffic yesterday, and observing the reactions to different settings, I come to the conclusion that it is not just the fanīs noise that irritates. It needs a lower speed setting.
Driving slowly in traffic on a cold day the lowest speed is still too much air, but with the fan switched off, there is no flow of air due to the slow vehicle speed. It is a relatively insignificant issue, but I expect there could well be a relatively simple way to drop the speed of the fan over a resistor or potentiometer, to find the sweet spot. glpinxit, it is a good sign, when such minor issues are so high on the priority list....on a Defender. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

You could ad a resistor or if you want to be REALLY picky about speed :
http://www.dx.com/p/jtron-12v-24v-30v-120w...qa_qIXhDuo or http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000W-40A-12V-24V-...SwjVVVvrzr You should use a PWM controller. http://www.instructables.com/id/Retrofitti...eed-contr/ and if you want to be incredibly fancy you could engineer some sort of cabin temperature based speed controller... (but you will have to have an override) Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark F31 320dA Msport xDrive LR Defender 90SW TD4 Stornoway grey 320d E46 E70 X5 3.0d Sold! FFRR TD6 - Sold |

Alexke, thanks, that should do the job. An extra knob beside the heater controls, so that each of the three speed settings can be fine tuned. Excellent. Youīre the man! 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

and if you use a NO-NC switch you can have double the amount of speed positions. Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark

I totally agree the fan on lowest setting is noisy but also gives too high an airflow. I agree with Wild Card turn it off and everything steams up but on level one it's too high and constantly have to adjust temperature for it to be comfortable. Unfortunately the above adjustable suggestions are electrically beyond me! I'd be interested to hear how people get on who do try it though.

Models prior to the Puma had fairly dire blower and heating, now the Puma's have too much puff Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Well coming from my old TD5 where the first fan speed was like an asthmatic snail on a bad day compared to speed 2 where your ears would bleed if it was on too long.
Also on either setting you had a good half hour before it gave out any heat so I consider the Puma the height of luxury. Stick on a good CD and turn up the volume till the other noises (fan, rattles, clunks, etc.) are inaudible - job done!! |
