Does anyone have the nakatanenga wheel carrier fitted to their landy?
http://nakatanenga-tours.de/shop/article_R...HNAPRHI%26 The reason i ask is because after looking at sonics one i think that i would have problems with the alko hitch stabiliser on my caravan not openning fully due to the obstruction of the lower bar on the wheel carrier. Also i would not be able to open the rear door as the carrier would either hit the caravans handbrake or the winding handle, meaning that i would have to unhitch the caravan every time the dogs went in and out. The Nakatanenga carrier seems to be well clear of the tow hitch area offering easier access and the ability to hitch up without openning the rear door to facilitate the alko stabiliser closing, I have to reverse the last foot or so just now with the back door open so that their is enough room to open the stabiliser then lower onto hitch ,close stabiliser then close rear door. I wasted money on a 4x4 hitch handle which gives the same problem as the normal one. 
Normally this is a minor nuisance but lately I have been losing a lot of hair from the top of my head which I believe is due to 3 cocker spaniels who seem to think its great the rear doors are open and the top of my head is in easy licking distance!  |

I tried fitting the biggest hitch spacer I could get but still had to open the door to hitch up. When i got the landy it had the tow pack fitted which at the time was great but now with hindsight would have preffered the safari adjustable hitch. Not going to change it now as I now want to remove the spare from the rear door as i have fitted 265/75 x16 BFG KM2's. I intend to keep the landy for a few years so want to remove the dead weight of the spare from the rear door and transfer the weight to the chassis and in doing so try to make hitching up to the caravan and boat trailer a lot easier. I like the idea of the Nakatanenga wheel carrier as it is offset to the drivers side and is well clear of the towball and looks as if it could be what I need in solving both problems. Would just like some feedback on it before spending close on £500 to get it.

No not yet, was hoping someone had it fitted so I could get feedback. There is only one little thing that is bothering me and that is the wheel carrier only uses 4 of the 6 spare wheel mount bolts. The top two are used as plugs in the picture which doesnt look right to me. What I would like to do is fit a chequer plate blank first then mount the wheel carrier, that way the whole area used by the original mount is covered hiding any damage to the paintwork and utilizing all 6 drilled holes. The problem is I dont know how much tolerance there is in adjusting the wheel carrier so it sits square on the back door with the added thickness of the chequer plate. I think that I'd better email Nakatanenga direct and ask! Hope google translate works as my German extends only as far as "ein beer bitte"

or just google nakatenga then on the results page find the nak site then click the right hand link "translate this page" and the whole site will translate

Just been having another look on the website at the carrier.
I would as would anyone agree that 6 bolts is better than 4 but does it really need the extra cost of material to make use of all 6 bolt holes in the door if the weight of the wheel will supported by the rear cross member? Just a thought Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

I'm guessing here as I have not had the oem wheel carrier off, that the oem carrier is bolted directly onto the door without a gasket. If that is the case then there will probably be some damage to the paintwork due to stress or the fact that the oem carrier is tightly bolted to the door. Using a chequer plate cover would hide this and use the 6 bolts. It is just a personal preference to fitting the chequer plate which will be powdercoated black before fitting the Nakatanenga wheel carrier, even though the top two bolts will be hidden by the spare wheel I will know they are there and it will bug me. After all owning and modding your Defender is down to your own taste or lack of it.

Hi Guys
how about a simple solution to the problem .. (well a simple £280 solution anyway!)
Fit one of the NAS style bumpers/steps to the waggon -(LR part no. STC50301) this moves the tow point back about 6 inches from the cross member thus improving the space to attach the trailer etc.. just a thought ... 
ops - just seen the photos of the wheel carrier and it wont fit with the bumper thing that I sugested... back to the drawing board! But having read the whole original post again it seems that my sugenstion will help with the original problem in connecting the caravan, but not in the sugested fitting of the wheel carrier.... clear as mud!!! No worry, me speak english!
We only use 4 of the 6 holes because there is no weight distributetd to the door. The "bone" which is the conection between the carrier and the door is fully adjustable as well the bump stops. So there is no matter why you should not fit a checker plate inbetween. Peter WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

Cheers Peter, and welcome to the site, missus is getting it for me for crimbo now. Just need to convince her that the glove box and under cubby box safe are needed as well to install the wheel carrier properly.  |
