I'm about to do 80 000km service, but 5w-30 oil is not readily available here in Maun.
A supplier has suggested that I rather use 10w-40, due to the high ambient temperatures we experience here. Winter averages 8 to 28 and summer 20 to 40+ (Celsius). They can readily supply Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 (A3/B4) and at a much cheaper price compared to the 5w-30. Is there any reason why I should NOT use 10w-40 in the 2.2 Puma? Thanks
Will contact supplier & see if this is even available. But already doubting, as Mobil pulled out of South(ern) Africa many years ago... Similar situation in Namibia - 5W-40 only available - probably due to higher ambient temperature most of the year.
Sent an email to Castrol ZA 10 days ago - there website is outdated and does not provide oil specs for the 2.2 Puma. Did receive an answer but not the required Castrol oil spec. Still intend to drop by at the local dealer to enquire which engine oil they use. Meanwhile this provides interesting reading: http://lubematch.shell.co.za/na/en_GB/equi..._EFt8PjQtl http://www.lubadmin.com/upload/produit/FichePDF/lang_1/162.pdf http://www.engen.co.za/home/apps/content/p.../oats.aspx My other vehicle is a 2011 BMW F25 X3 - BMW changed from Castrol to Shell as a preferred provider in 2014/-15. In the 2.2 Puma I now carry 500ml Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 - as 5W-30 is not available locally. Hope this helps. |

Hi Sadi
Please let me know what the dealer says and would you mind asking them about using 10w-40? I'm up near Shakawe and not getting response from Bots nor SA dealers. Perfect timing
A friend is coming up from Maun today. I'll be using Castrol Magnatec, which is what LR has used on my previous services. I'm currently in a tropical country and am able to get my paws on LiquiMoly SpecialTec F 5W-30 (Ford Spec) which is perfect for my 2.4 Puma.
As for using other grades, the previous owner of my truck used (I was told) Shell Helix 15W-40 or 15W-30 which, again I was told, was what killed my turbo. So reading the posts above, I'm guessing that this may not be the case? While the local Shell has the special Rimula formula that can be used with the Puma, it's a special order oil and not the ones you find at the local fuel stations. I'll watch this thread with interest as I won't probably have to spend a bundle on oil if I don't have to... |

the problem with using oils other than what LR specifies is when something goes wrong, they will reject any warranty claims using this reason.
so be careful. Bushpig, I use Fuchs oil conforming to the Ford specs, I'm sure you can get it delivered from CPT? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
