Your best bet is simply to check how realistic the specs sound. A Cree XM-L2 is about the best you can get at the moment in terms of light output. They are maxed out at ~1000 lumens and 10W. Most of your driving light type lights are not going to be running XM-L2's though, so IME, anything claiming more than 6-800 lumens per LED is probably lying. Also looks at lumens per watt. They won't show it, but they will generally claim a lumen output and power consumption. Again, 100 lumens/watt or more and I'd be suspicious. Also check that the claimed "power" matches up with the claimed current consumption. Less scrupulous sellers will shout about 100W LED lights that somehow only need 2A at 12V! (24W if anyone needed clarifying) Happy hunting, and let us know what you find! |

Where are you mounting them? I'm assuming you're after round lights?
I find the Speaker TS3001R very, very good. They are 6"diameter so aesthetically OK for roof-mounting. I personally think that anything larger on the roof ends up looking like Mickey Mouse ears... The 4000's are awesome, and at 7" they look great on the the front of the Defender... If useful, I can post a picture of 4x TS3001's mounted on roof rack. |

It is not as simple as that I am sorry to say. The actual LED manufacturers grade a particular LED product by both lumen output and by colour temperature. To know exactly what diode is fitted you will need the next 6-8 digits in the diode product code. I am guessing that there is a price differential across the different grades of LEDs so even if two manufacturers claim they are using the same LED one could be top grade whereas the other might be the lowest of the low. Will not go into the difference between raw and effective lumens again. Even IF two manufacturers are using exactly the same grade of LED it does not mean that the light output on the ground is the same, as it depends on many other factors such as the quality of the electronic driver, reflector, lens, heat sink etc. Great changes are going on in light technology. Vision X are doing a single LED spotlight at 25, 50 and 90 watts. I have seen the 25 watt Vision X spot light in action and it is impressive. The single 25 and 50 watt LED headlights are E marked and road legal, I do not know about the 90 watt spot light. These are class leading spotlights and do not come cheap! Have heard of a single 100 watt LED but not seen it in production. Also have heard claims of 100+ lumens per watt, however are they in production of lights for the mass market yet. Will the cheap unbranded lights be using the best/ cutting edge LED? Some general pointers for selection of a light. Branded or unbranded? Personally I would say branded. The chances are that any figure given by a reputable branded light is more realistic Shape and size of light, will it actually fit where you want to fit it. Weight, a LED light runs better at a cooler temperature so the heavier one might have a larger heat sink. Terms waterproof ( which means very little) or an IP rating? IP 67 is minimum, IP69K is best Light output? Where are you driving, what are you trying to achieve? A fill in light close to vehicle or trying to light up the desert. It is possible to have too much light output, so you get too much reflected back light of objects close to, also you are 'blind' when you go back to just headlights. Road legal, I.e. E marked etc Prices can vary from less then £100 to over a grand! If it is just looks and budget is/is not relevant go for whatever tickles your fancy Brendan |

Yes an No. Most of the Generic stuff you can buy is running the same board with the same LED's. From memory these are Cree XP-g's, 6 per board, being driven at ~1A. I can dig out the one I have here and re-do the maths. Works out to a toal of ~18W per 6-led module, and around 1200L. These are in play in many of your 6&12 LED lamps, and also in many lightbars. I can't imagine the specs differ all that much. Yes raw vs OTF lumens makes a difference, but as a simple excercise to sort the junk from the vaguely useful stuff, it's a good guideline. 100+ Lumens/watt is entirely acheivable, I have a lighthead that I built with XM-l2s here doing just that. However, not many people are using such up to date dies just yet. Most of the usage of brand new dies is driven by the handheld torch market. Whilst there is good branded and unbranded stuff out there, at the cheaper end of the market, a lot of the 'branded' is just the unbranded item with a profit margin slapped on top. If you can see two lights that look identical but for the price tag, the chances are they are identical! I really like the look of the visionX stuff, and would love to get a couple. I'd be intrigued to know which Luminus LED's they're using. Worth noting also that the Luminus dies are physically very large, hence the ability for such high output. |
