Do you want it lifting the proper way, or just for looks?

Purely lifting to fit new rims/tyres. What would you recommend? If there is a kit that will improve handling and comfort that's a bonus! |

Don't know yet. I'm looking to replace my stock suspension with a heavy duty set. A reseller I know recommended them, and told me they are much better than they used to be. He's dead if he's lying 28/02 - Loss of a good friend... In a time of chimpanzees, I was a penguin. |

I have 2" lift on my 90, and am very happy with it. While not wishing to imply this is the right way to go, for your own purpose, it has worked extremely well for us.
The first owner fitted (from new) Koni Heavy Track Raids (5374, 5375īs) and Trailmaster +50mm springs (front - standard duty - FTM 76014, rear - heavy duty - FTM 76158) and GKN extended double UJ'ed propshaft. All sourced from Nakatakenga. The spring combination was recommended to him specifically for towing. I bought the 90 2 years ago, and although happy with the ride, felt it wandered too much under braking, and could be improved. I had the trailing arms front and rear replaced with 3° caster corrected (at the front) ones and beafier (2" lift) ones at the rear. I also fitted new tubular front turrets and extended rear shock mounts to bring the Konis back to their mid travel position. The on road handling is as good as my previous unmodified TD4, and has excellent cornering stabilty. Otherwise a lightly equipped 90, it works well both with and without a 3.5 ton trailer on the back. We donīt have any isssue with the ride, and having put another 30000 Km believe we are qualified to judge. The Konis are one click over their softest setting, and are more than likely underemployed on our a relatively light equipped 90. We only go occasionally off road, where the vehicle feels totally at home. Absolutely no clearance issues with 7x16 ZUīs, 30mm spacers and 255/85 MTīs, which are 35mm larger in diameter (an additional increase in ground clearance) than the standard 235īs. Hope this is of help. It is only one of many ways to go. Oh the little "downturn" on the end of the middle pipe? That was just a temporary solution while I was waiting for a raised through-body tailpipe to be made.
As is often the case with provisional solutions, it stayed on a while, and showed no disadvantage whatsoever. Because the 2.2 cat and DPF motor produces so little noise and fumes, there was nothing significant to report. Now the middle silencer is removed, and a lovely stainless tailpipe fitted. Works very well, but still in need of fettling. The heat from the cat, paticularly in regeneration phase (550+°) , causes the exhaust system to expand about 6-7mm, which means it colides with the aluminium bezel. A larger bezel is in the works. Wild Card 90 - thanks for the info, will look into it and weigh up the options
And yes the exhaust setup is quite unique, I saw another one on YouTube the other night which had a side exit exhaust inform of the wheel rear wheel. Interesting set up. |

Thanks very much there, Skip. Much appreciated. @ Spectre, if you were nearby (or Iīd be over visiting) Iīd offer you a drive to experience the settup for yourself. It is definitely worth driving one or two other Landys with modded suspension before you invest. Worth keeping in mind that what works for a fully loaded 110 or 130 wonīt neccessarily be good for a 90, and the other way round. On spec. I was expecting the Heavy Track Raids (Koni tells me they are basically an adaption of their HGV range) and the HD springs at the rear would produce something a ride like an empty Transit or pickup truck. Not at all the case. However the shocks and springs are stiff enough to stop the Defender from hopelessly rolling like a Citroen in the corners. I donīt have any anti roll bars fitted. I believe, current 90īs do not have them from the factory, and they are not needed. That changes if you have a roof tent or a fully loaded touring settup. Good luck with your search. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Most Defender-sized tyres don't need a lift... |
