If the heads are on the original blocks, the engine numbers will tell you. 8:1 engine numbers start 901... and 7:1 start 904...
The compression pressure are 160psi and 145psi respectively. Finally IIRC there will generally be an 8 or a 7 stamped on the flat machined boss just above the centre branches of the inlet manifold. |

also don't forget there are 3 and 5 main bearing cranks on series 3 s , 5 bearing obviously better. I've heard that the 2.5 petrol out of a Defender is a good upgrade but they are quite difficult to find S/H DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

As a slightly left-field choice, of you can find one the perkins Prima 2.0l turbo diesel is a great swap. I helped Rallysteve on here do one in his 109 a few years ago and it was absolutely brilliant! Light, powerful, excellent performance and good on fuel!
Far better than the series petrol or diesels, I think I would possibly even take one in preference to a tdi....... Chris |

I've always been lead to believe that the 3 bearing engine is more highly regarded than the 5, but I cannot now remember why and personally only have experience of the 3. I have a feeling that the crankshaft is actually stronger on the 3.
The 3mb engine is pretty indestructible, there is a story of one running half the length of Africa with a broken oil pump and an overfilled sump to splash lubricate the bottom end, but I don't know how true it is. |

I thought the crank was changed to 5 bearing as an improvement to a weakness in the 3 bearing crank.
Fwiw I would try and stick with an original spec engine, series are really rusing on price I've a s3 with a 2.25 petrol and another with a 200 tdi, the 200 tdi has been virtually maintenance free since I installed it in December 2010, yet I plan on taking it out putting a 2.25 petrol back in. My problem with the tdi is the noise and vibration! |
