Which family roof tent?
I'm looking for a large roof tent to fit my 110 which will sleep 2 adults and 3 children. Anyone know the best ones to go for please?

Think you might have to go for two roof tents.
I haven't seen one big enough for five.
Lots of families have the two tent set up.
Hopefully someone knows better.
Good luck with the search Thumbs Up

I remember reading a similar topic on a German forum (blacklandy.eu) not too long ago. It seemed a reputable firm used to have a family size roof top tent. I'm sorry but I don't remember the company's name. However, the tent was discontinued and is no longer sold. The general concensus there was that a 2 tent setup was the best in the end, although some that had gotten their hands on the family tent were quite pleased with it. I'll see if I can dig up the thread and post a link so you can "google translate" it in case your German is a little rusty... Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

The howling moon do a 2.4 which is 2.4m long by 2.4m wide. A big ole lump on your roof.

We have decided to go with a 1.6 and a 1.8 for our rack.

Flat Dog UK and Trek both supply them. Lovely construction. 1951 80" S1 2.0

Issue with the Maggiolina's in that size is that they are just too wide to be sensible on anything with a green oval apart from a 101! Laughing 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....

Thanks for the pointers guys, the Hannibal is about £1000 more than than the howling moon, thats a massive difference! Is it worth it? Cant seem to find the family size tent on the flatdog website though

I like the idea of these tents but in reality how does it work.

We tend to pitch up and stay somewhere for at least 3 nights before moving on. The tent is set up like a home from home, kids have their 'room' and ours, Roll mats, tables, chairs etc. Their toys etc etc..

If you have a roof tent and want to go out for the day is it not a pain? For an overnight stop I understand or out in the sticks.. so I guess it depend how you camp?

Another option I could understand is a roof tent on a trailer? at least that stays set up?

how big is a roof sent that sleeps 5?... Anyone a picture of it set up.

Thanks

Historically the HM tents have been rated better than the competition but most of the South African stuff is well developed. I have owned both but the HM is better made no doubt.

Speak to Flat dog. They have only put the tents on this week and do the 1.8 and 2.4. All to order with 1/3 deposit to secure. 1951 80" S1 2.0

I think MyWay sell a family size tent. Likely to be less heavy than the canvas style tents.

Flatdog are now selling HM tents at brilliant prices.
I have a 1.6 Hannibal but would prefer a HM now I have helped my friend set his up.
The extended fly sheet on my Hannibal is rubbish compared to the HM one.
The only thing with a roof tent on your vehicle is when you get set up you can't really use your vehicle to go anywhere without packing it up again. Be better on a trailer if you need to still use the vehicle to get about.
Me the Mrs & our 2 lads still love the roof tent though, very dark inside on bright mornings unlike your standard ground tents. Nice comfy mattress to sleep on & leave your sleeping gear inside when you pack it up saving room in the truck for other bits.
My advice is get in touch with Flatdog. Thumbs Up
