A well written and entertaining article but cannot agree with his comment about the car being as wieldy as a draught horse doing dressage. I think this photo disproves his theory.

his article has some truths not least that its not been loved or invested in for so long...there are many reasons for that including enthusiasts.
That said, there are worse cars and 4x4's out there...there are also better. many farmers i know who have jap c ![]() it has some advantages and disadvantages - but one things for sure, its a bad day when you point out you need to drive the thing, whats life come to when you buy something only for it to do it for you - whats the point in living Mike |

I don't get this. Either my one is awesome and everyone else got a lemon, or people are looking at things I'm not. I've taken mine off road quite a few times down green lanes, done 8,000 miles in it now, driven 200 miles in one go, and it's brilliant. I adjusted the steering under warranty as it was pulling to the left but aside from that, no hassel. I got it waxyoyled from day 1, and no rust. I do check it from time to time and spray wd40 etc. or more waxoyl on there, but altogether it seems a tough piece of kit and I've done things in it you couldn't do in many other vehicles (30 degree inclines on rocky terrain). |

I love my defender and happy to drive it everywhere. but that is just me, being a sadist driving it offroad, worrying it may break down. and if it did, I will laugh and say" well its a land rover" ( and it DID TWICE).

You either get it or you don't
pointless comparing them to modern stuff Like driving an old classic....it's all about the nostalgia and daring to be different Never had an issue with the elbow thing and I'm 6.2" |

Although harsh, most of what he says is true enough.
Defenders peaked at Td5... |

Im sorry - i cant sign up to the TD5 being the best...despite a personal things of not liking the engine.
The dash, worse, the seats, worse, the heating, worse, finish, worse, options, worse. The TD5 was not the best defender, it was a new engine on a 300tdi Mike |

No need to be sorry, there are others who are more wrong than you.

From a modern days point of view there are of course many cars that are more comfortable, more economic and overall better, but nothing compares to what defines a Defender. All its little faults and "weaknesses" define its character and I wouldn't change it for any Mercedes G, Landcruiser or Jeep.
I always like to compare it to a camping trip in a tent out in the wilderness vs one in a super comfortable camper on a campsite. You wouldn't ever talk to someone about how comfortable you've spent your holidays in your appartment on wheels and how you felt you never even left your safe and warm home. Sometimes things have to be a little rough, uncomfortable and inconvenient to make it an adventure - to make it special. And this is exactly why I and I guess most of us here simply love our mighty Land Rovers. For me, it was the best decision to get one of the last remaining ones, despite every one saying I should not - for the exact reasons mentioned by the Daily Telegraph - the reasons which made me love the Defender over the months even more... (and after getting a wave from a fellow Defender-driver on my test drive prior buying it, I had no other chance but to get it anyways ![]() |

your all right ! theres a chink in our DNA which makes us like, no love these vehicles, when I sold my TD5 some years back my kids were gutted, now they are at uni, and as soon as they knew I bought another they both said can we drive it when we come back, but its really weird, my wife has a BMW x1 which is quiet, comfortable and feels safe, but even my wife allways wondered why I sold my old one, but here I am again and very happy ineed
