First things first: Hello from Belgium! I just signed up, but the Welcome forum was no longer available?

For a few years now, we own a 2008 110. I never was able to activate the diff Lock. A “Defender specialist” whom I asked to look into it while it was in for maintenance, claimed is was working fine, just that the warning light was a bit “hit &miss” to get it to work. Didn’t really believe what he said, but left it at that.

Fast forward a year or so, the reverse light stopped working, so I had to replace the switch at the gearbox. At the same time, I took a look at the diff Lock linkages. When I turned the diff locker with a 10mm spanner, the indicator light came up on the Dash immediately. when using the gear lever, the linkage won’t go to the right far enough to Lock in. I took 2 pics diff open/diff closed and it seems to me that the U shaped link is too wide. Measured the thing and it is about 44mm- which is the same size as all the replacement part sizes I can find online. I’m a bit lost as to what could be wrong with it.

Hi bokkerijder

I had a similar issue a when I first got mine (2013), it would engage difflock but would always pop out and disengage within a short space of time. Have a look at the parts diagram below. It turned out to be the plastic shroud (2) had come loose from its mounting and was fouling the diff lock lever, preventing it from being able to be fully moved over. The shroud is only held in place by gravity and can be easily dislodged.
It can be accessed from inside the vehicle. You need to remove the centre matting and then both levers (4 & 9) as well as the rubber gaiter (6) and foam squib (7).

Thanks for your input. Nothing seems to be out of place from the lever down to the U link. Already checked that.

The U link got the Vise/Hammer/Pliers treatment and All is working fine now. Not the most elegant solution, but at least it works like a charm now.

It’s a use it or lose it scenario with the linkage for the diff lock. Periodically lube the mechanism from underneath and also push the lever over from time to time, say before going on a journey or upon returning if you’re not using it frequently…..this should keep it happy.
Also it’s worth putting the box into low every now and then thus exercising that linkage. You don’t have to be going anywhere, just get into the habit of doing it now and then. Thumbs Up

What lube would people use on the mechanism? I've got a choice of standard lithium grease, graphite grease, silicone grease, moly grease, ptfe spray and plain old engine oil. If I use normal lithium grease, will it all end up caked it crop from the road? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I just sprayed a little motorcycle chain lube onto it and that worked but due to the location of the linkage i think any lube will melt due to the heat from the exhaust so be prepared to get some drips.
